Extracurricular Activities
In order for a student to participate in a school-sponsored activity or function, it is necessary that the student be in attendance at least five full periods on that day. This includes, but is not limited to sports, clubs, play rehearsals, concerts, and dances. Students, who are suspended from school on the day of an athletic practice session or game, school dance, concert, or any other school-sponsored activity, are not eligible for attendance or participation at such event(s).
Activities/Clubs
All students have an opportunity to realize their talents through a variety of clubs and activities, in addition to the curriculum offerings. In the past, these have included Mathletes, Current Events Team, Leadership Club, Homework Club, Home & Careers Club, Geography Club, Newspaper, and the Yearbook. In addition, our musical productions have included classics such as Shrek, Beauty and the Beast, Peter Pan, Annie, and Cinderella, Seussical, Willy Wonka and Dear Edwina.
Student Government
Each secondary school includes a general organization whose primary purpose is to foster school spirit and to promote pride in West Islip Schools. The Student Council governs grades 6-8. It is made up of a board of officers, including a president, vice-president, secretary, treasurer and student representatives (one elected from each homeroom).
The mission of Student Council is to encourage students to develop a “sense of self” through shared decision-making, and a “sense of community” through service. The Student Council coordinates the Middle School’s major social events, fundraisers and special projects. It also organizes the sale of G.O. cards to foster school spirit by encouraging students to attend athletic and social events. The G.O. card enables students to receive a discount on certain athletic games, dances, and PTA activities. The proceeds from the sale of G.O. cards assist in the cost of school-sponsored student activities.
Athletics
Seventh and eighth grade students have the opportunity to realize their potential through the extensive athletic program, which fields teams in football, wrestling, baseball, softball, cheerleading, as well as boys’ and girls’ soccer, swimming, cross country, track & field, tennis, basketball, volleyball, and lacrosse.
