Carolyn Leighton Scholarships

For engineering students of APAC to attend
the WITI Global Summit, 2021.

Our Vision

Carolyn Leighton Scholarships have been established to honor the vision of Carolyn Leighton and her work in building out this global sisterhood over the last 30 years.

Through this scholarship, WITI hopes to provide exposure to young leaders - women in tech and male allies - to current industry conversations and give access to relatable role models. Financial ability shouldn’t be a deterrent to women’s careers and hence, by providing an avenue for women to build relationships with fellow women in tech, we are taking a step towards realizing Carolyn’s vision of ‘No woman stands alone’.

Why APAC?

Various studies conducted in the APAC region show that women often leave their job at key junctures of the career ladder across all Southeast Asian demographics. Therefore, while women make up more than 50% of university graduates in tech, they occupy fewer than 15% of senior leadership positions.

The regional differences between the Asia Pacific countries show that there is no single approach to solving this issue - but rather, an array of systemic, political and personal choices that can help us chip away at this problem. For young female engineering students, having access to experienced women in tech at this crucial juncture could not only act as inspiration and source of information and guidance, but also offer a glimpse into the reality of being a female employed in the field of science and/or technology - and hence, better preparing them for the challenges lying ahead.

About Carolyn Leighton

Carolyn Leighton founded WITI in 1989 as an email network for women in all technology sectors, eventually growing it to a worldwide organization dedicated to empowering women to achieve unimagined possibilities and transformations through technology, leadership and economic prosperity.

She has over 35 years of experience as an educator and entrepreneur. Carolyn was named one of the "Top 100 Women in Computing" in 1997 as well as in 2000 for her accomplishments in the field. Under Carolyn Leighton's leadership and vision, WITI has prospered to now be a global community of more than three million professionals, 60 networks and 300 partners, worldwide.
