"The Problem with Right/Wrong Education" (a letter to U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos)

Hi! My name is Amanda Cabrera, I’m a senior at Weslaco East High School and I am currently 17 years old. I am the second child and have three sisters.

Throughout high school, I have spent my time being in several organizations and hold positions such as President of the Interact Club, President of the National Honor Society, and Vice President of the Senior Class. I also run cross country and track and made it to regionals for cross country this year. I’ve also been a soprano in choir for nine years, and I am a member of the UIL journalism team. Being in these organizations and extra curricular activities has taught me responsibility and expanded my love for working with others. I’ve always loved working with people and helping them whenever I can be of assistance which has fed my passion to study in a major where I can help others. I plan to attend the University of Texas at Austin to major in Communication of Sciences and Disorders. With this degree, I plan to become a speech pathologist so I can help those who have speech problems to help make their lives easier. I’ve always loved the idea of working with children and with this career I can work with them and be able to help make their lives easier.
