2017 Summer Tech Camps

WISD Summer Tech Camps

Weslaco ISD will offer 4 summer tech camp programs for students enrolled in WISD.

Student participation based on student application:

      • DIY Girls: A 5th grade to middle-school “Girls Only” one week camp offering coding, gaming, electronics, and STEAM-related career investigations. Girls will be selected for this program based on their student application. Parents will be notified of selection.
      • Inventor's Lab: Do you have a STEAM project you’ve been wanting to investigate? The Inventor's Lab is a 3-week camp designed for students to pursue their passion projects with the support of mentors. Students rising to 4th grade and up will be selected for this program based on their student application.

Student participation based on campus recommendation:

      • Blended Learning Academy: A 3-week summer program with the goals to empower learners to select and achieve learning goals, develop computational thinkers that can use technology to solve problems, and use digital media to develop creative communicators through STEAM activities and literacy in a Blended Learning environment. Campus representatives will select students for this Academy.
      • UTRGV Robotics & Engineering Program: A one-week camp at UTRGV in Edinburg to learn about STEM concepts and how they relate to transportation safety by designing and building vehicles to obey traffic lights, signs, and signals. Campus representatives will nominate students for this camp.

What happened to the STEAM camp?

The STEAM Camp has evolved into 4 distinct opportunities in meeting needs of our WISD students. The Blended Learning Academy will offer depth of study in science, technology, engineering and math while supporting language acquisition through reading and writing activities. The DIY Girls program is an effort to promote science, technology, engineering, and math for our WISD girls, a known area internationally with a shortage of girls entering these fields of study. The Inventor's Lab offers students with the STEAM passion to study their area of interest in depth by focusing their study to a specific topic.

How can I get my child enrolled?

Students must be enrolled in WISD. Campus representatives will select students for two of the programs, and two programs base student participation on student applications. Students can complete the application at home or at school by clicking on the the application buttons above. This year the programs range in grade level from 4th grade-MS. HS students may enroll in the Inventor's Lab.

Where and when will this take place?

The Blended Learning Academy, DIY Girls, and Inventor's Lab will take place at B.Garza Middle School. The summer program hours are from 8-2:00. Students will be served breakfast before 8 and lunch midday.

What about transportation?

Parents can choose to use the school bus service, or drop off/pick up.
