According to the National Geographic Kids website, "The first Earth Day was celebrated in 1970, when a United States senator from Wisconsin organized a national demonstration to raise awareness about environmental issues. Rallies took place across the country and, by the end of the year, the U.S. government had created the Environmental Protection Agency. By 1990, Earth Day was an event celebrated by more than 140 countries around the globe."
Earth Day is on April 22nd, and is a day for celebrating our planet by doing such activities as picking up litter and planting trees.

In the episode "Earth Day Today / Earth Day Every Day," it's Earth Day! To celebrate, Nature Cat, Squeeks, Daisy and Hal go on a nature hike, but they don't get too far because they keep running into plastic bags blowing in the wind. Nature Cat and his pals come up with a solution, and learn that Earth Day is every day.
Ask your child:
What does Nature Cat want to do to celebrate Earth Day?
What happens instead?
How do you think we could celebrate Earth Day?
What could we do to clean up our Earth?
Visit the National Parks from your living room with Nature Cat!
Ask your child:
Which was your favorite National Park?
What plants and animals live there?
What was the most interesting thing you learned about it? How could we learn more?
