Virtual Resident Graduation!
Our program hosted a virtual graduation gathering on June 23rd to recognize Drs. Margaret Nolan and Richard Crawford on their achievement in completing our residency program. We were thrilled to have so many faculty and friends of the residency at the meeting! Though it was unconventional, we were able to connect and say all of the words of a appreciation that we would have said to each other had we been together. Having a virtual ceremony also meant that many more family members were able to join, which was a silver lining. Not only did we hear great words from Maggie and Rich, we also were able to recognize some of our invaluable faculty and mentors. The recipients for Excellence in Teaching awards went to Dr. Michael Miller and Dr. Michael Fiore and the Distinguished Service Award went to Dr. Parvathy Pillai.
Congratulations, Maggie and Rich!
Collin Pitts completes MPH Coursework
Congratulations to Collin Pitts (PG3), who has completed his MPH coursework. In his first semester, between learning about the Central Limit Theorem, health equity, the social determinants of health, and communicating effectively, he welcomed his daughter, Lilly, into the world. During his second semester, public health took center stage as the coronavirus pandemic took off. While balancing his varied coursework and the transition to distance learning, he assisted with several projects at the Wisconsin Department of Health Services.
As the recipient of the ACS Physician Training Award in Cancer Prevention, much of his work revolved around cancer and cancer prevention. His work included infographics on HPV vaccines, presentations on modifiable risk factors related to cancer, creating awareness of cervical cancer at the state health department, grant proposals for breast cancer screening for high risk populations, and his capstone work has focused on breast cancer mortality disparities in Wisconsin. In addition, he was able to take a class focused on cancer epidemiology.
“It truly was an unforgettable year. Not only have I had a wonderful experience with fantastic instructors and learning, I’ve been blown away by the empathy and understanding of everyone involved with the program.”
ACPM Article Feature
Many of our residents collaborated to write an article for the American College of Preventive Medicine (ACPM) about virtual interviewing. Our program has been conducting web interviews for years and have become quite comfortable in the format. We have been so successful in fact that we have recruited two residents completely via web interview. Check out the article here.
