Unit time frame: 3 weeks
While there is a lot of information about familial relationships in the Luganda textbooks, there is considerably less learning material about other important relationships in Kiganda society. This final section aims at introducing Luganda learners to some of these extra-kin relationships. The readings and assignments listed below discuss relationships between neighbors, friends, lovers, and blood-brothers.

Very close affectionate friendship between men: obususuta
Friend: mukwana, munno
My dear/my friend (term of endearment): munnange
My dear (informal): owange

Readings: 1) the oral tradition “Sifirwakange ne Kasokambirye” 2) an excerpt from Basajja Mivule: Soma Oyige, “misadventures of playboys” 3) proverbs about friendship, love, and lust in Amagezi g’Omuganda Amakusike 4) Lessons on being a good friend in Siwa Muto Lugero 4) selected poems in Jangu Tutontome.
Assignments: 1) 15-30 minutes playing Quizlet vocabulary games and then read for 30 minutes daily. 2) In Luganda, write the main characteristics of a good friend/bad friend. According to the readings, what are the obligations, benefits, and potential dangers associated with friendship? 3) Look through the readings and Luganda-English dictionaries to try and find new words for friendship and romantic relationships. Make a vocabulary list of these new terms.
Activity: 1) Find and listen to Luganda love songs. 2) Instead of writing an essay for this unit, spend 20-30 minutes each week writing about your own affective relationships.
Week 2: Neighbors and Good Neighborliness
Readings: 1) “Balirraano” (“Neighbors”) in Ekitabo kye Mpisa za Baganda 2) proverbs about neighbors in Amagezi g’Omuganda Amakusike 3) Lessons on being a good neighbor in Siwa Muto Lugero.
Assignments: 1) 15-30 minutes playing Quizlet vocabulary games and then read for 30 minutes daily. 2) In Luganda, write the main characteristics of a good neighbor/bad neighbor. According to the readings, what are the obligations, benefits, and potential dangers associated with neighbors? 4) Make a list of vocabulary words commonly used to talk about neighbors.
Activity: 1) 20-30 minutes of Journal writing. .
Week 3: Blood-Brotherhood
Readings: 1) the oral tradition “Ndyakubi ne Ndalakubi” 2) proverbs about blood-brotherhood and coffee berries in Amagezi g’Omuganda Amakusike.
Assignments: 1) 15-30 minutes playing Quizlet vocabulary games and then read for 30 minutes daily. 2) In Luganda, write the main characteristics of blood-brotherhood. According to the readings, what are the obligations, benefits, and potential dangers associated with blood-brotherhood? 4) In Luganda, write one page about the similarities and differences between friends, lovers, neighbors, and blood-brotherhood relationships.
Activity: 1) 20-30 minutes of Journal writing one day this week.
