Join the statewide search for aquatic invasive species!
Help identify new populations of AIS across Southeast Wisconsin.
Volunteers, water lovers, and local conservation groups will meet on Saturday, August 8 from 8:30 am to 12:30 pm to search for aquatic invasive species at ponds and rivers throughout the Racine area.
Snapshot Day is a blitz monitoring event where we can search several waters for new populations of AIS in a one-day span. The efforts of passionate volunteers, like you, have helped identify new populations of AIS across Wisconsin during and after the event, allowing the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources (WDNR) and local conservation partners to manage concerns and protect our waters.
This is a free event and no experience or special equipment is required.
Recommended for ages 8 and up; minors must be accompanied by an adult.

8:30 AM – 9:00 AM Sign in at Lockwood Park Pond and receive monitoring site assignments.
9:00 AM – 9:30 AM Brief training on how to identify AIS and follow search protocols.
9:30 AM – 11:30 AM Search for aquatic invasive species at monitoring sites.
11:30 AM – 12:30 PM Return to Lockwood Park Pond shelter to report your finds!

If entering the water, gripy shoes that can get wet or waders
Water bottle
Hat
Sunscreen
Bug repellant
Polarized sunglasses (reduces glare and can see into the water better)
Smartphone/camera to take photos of your findings and to get action shots of your teammates
Binoculars to scan distant shorelines for AIS

Snapshot Day began in 2014 and was originally organized by River Alliance of Wisconsin. Snapshot Day is currently organized by University of Wisconsin-Madison Division of Extension in close partnership with the WDNR. Funding is provided by the WDNR. Snapshot Day is held in coordination with Starry Trek, an AIS search event held in Minnesota on the same day, hosted by Minnesota Aquatic Invasive Species Research Center and University of Minnesota Extension.
