Madison Writing Assistance (MWA)

The Madison Writing Assistance (MWA) program offers free, one-to-one writing support for community members at public locations throughout the city, and now online.

📢 Note: If you are a currently enrolled student at University of Wisconsin-Madison, please schedule an appointment with the UW-Madison Writing Center. MWA service is reserved for those who do not have access to writing assistance provided by the university.

In person

We're eager to see you! MWA writing coaches are located at various libraries and neighborhood centers across Madison. You can discuss your writing with them via appointment, or you can simply stop by and see if there's an opening. If you want to write something but haven't started on a draft, no problem! We're happy to brainstorm with you and develop a plan.

HOW TO MAKE AN IN-PERSON APPOINTMENT

Option 1: Meadowood Neighborhood Center

Step 1: Visit the Meadowood Neighborhood Center between 10:00 AM and 12:00 PM on Wednesdays.

Step 2: Check in with the JOB SHOP for additional guidance and resources for job hunting.

Option 2: Madison Public Library branches

Step 1: Check the Madison Public Library events calendar to see when and where Madison Writing Assistance is available.

Step 2: Click on the date and time you want in the calendar, and select "Sign up/Register."

Step 3: Call your selected library branch with any questions about your registration, parking, and public health policies.

If you can't make it to one of our public locations, you can still discuss your writing with us via Google Meet. If you want to write something but haven't started on a draft, no problem! We're happy to brainstorm with you and develop a plan.

In your email, please include your name, available days/times, and a brief description of your writing project.

We will respond to your email within one business day to confirm an appointment time.

You may email your draft as well as your concerns/questions to an MMA instructor. Your instructor will give written feedback on your writing via email.

EMAIL CONSULTATION POLICIES

  • Your writing coach will provide feedback within one business day of your scheduled appointment.

  • Your coach will spend approximately 45 minutes reading and commenting on your writing.

  • If you share a long piece of writing, please indicate what you would like receive feedback on. If you would like to set up multiple appointments, please let us know and we will try to accommodate your request.
