The Material Advantage and American Foundry Society (MA/AFS) is a program designed for students interested in Materials Science and Engineering. We provide students with access to a wide variety of resources, including scholarships and grants, career development, and technical information.
Two of our teams, The Madtown Axemen and Mad Badger Metalcasters, competed in the Steel Founders' Society of America's Cast in Steel National Competition. The topic this year was a Horseman's Axe where 58 teams competed. The Madtown Axemen got 2nd overall, 2nd in performance, and 1st in historical accuracy. Mad Badger Metalcasters got 1st overall, 1st in performance, and 2nd in historical accuracy.
Our students had the amazing opportunity to attend the largest Materials Science and Engineering conference of the year in San Diego, CA. They were able to attend talks by global faculty and industry members, covering all aspects of materials.
Our students representing our chapter at the monthly dinner events held by the regional ASM chapter, connecting with professionals and attending illuminating talks about various aspects of the Materials Science and Engineering world.
Several of our members had the wonderful opportunity to travel to Detroit, MI to represent our chapter at the IMAT(International Materials, Applications and Technologies) conference -- connecting with professionals and advancing their understanding of how materials science is applied in the world.
A group of students had the pleasure to attend the MS&T (Materials Science and Technology) Conference in Columbus, OH. There they were able to attend a multitude of talks that covered many fields of materials science.
Every year the materials department holds a competition between the faulty and the students. Last year the faculty won due to imported talent (Boston Marathon runner was drafted for a 2 week research somehow, conveniently, during CrazyLegs and finished top 1%).
A small group of our members participated in the annual casting competition. Their task this year was to cast a replica of George Washington's sword, which they produced admirably, earning a top 6 finish nationally in the prestigious competition amidst a pool of over 50 teams.
