How can I use this in my teaching?
Heartpedia provides a platform to discuss and review congenital heart lesions.
It can be used to demonstrate [both visually and in text] the differences between a normal heart and one with a lesion.
3D rendering of the abnormal heart and its repair help aide the learner understand what surgical corrections are needed.
How do I use it?
Install the app on your phone:
Go to your phone’s app store [App Store for iPhone, Google Play for Android] and search for and download Heartpedia [it is made by Cincinnati Children’s].
Look for teal-colored heart folding in the middle to look like a book - that is the icon.
Reviewing a Congenital Heart Lesion:
Once you have selected the lesion you want to discuss, the app will default to the Defect model. You can toggle between the Normal and Defect to visually demonstrate lesions.
You can click on Repair to show what the actual surgical correction would look like.
You can toggle the anatomy labels on or off by clicking on the icon at the bottom that looks like a tag.
You can look in to the heart and appreciate the lesions with short- or long-axis section of the heart by pressing the icon of the heart with a dotted line through it.
Reading about the selected heart lesion:
On the bottom left hand corner, there is an icon that looks like a paper with text. Clicking on that will take you to a page that discussed what the lesion is, sign and symptoms associated with the lesion, how to diagnose the lesion, and treatment. It even has an area that discusses Adult and Adolescent management.
Other useful tips and tricks:
If there is an icon at the bottom right hand corner of the screen that looks like a dotted television, then clicking on it will direct you to a YouTube video discussion the heart lesion.
You can move the heart in three dimensions by holding your finger on the image and moving it up/down/left/right. You can zoom in or out of an area of the heart by pinching or separating your fingers when touching the image.
