Workshops and Field Trips

There are both pre-meeting workshops on Tuesday, June 7th and a post-meeting field trip on Saturday, June 11th that participants are welcome to attend. See below for more information and reach out to the contact people if you are interested in attending. Please be sure to register for the field trip or contact the pre-meeting workshop leaders no later than May 2nd.

Working With Neotoma: From data entry to data access

Type: Pre-meeting workshop

Date: June 7th, 8:00am-12:00pm

Location: Department of Geoscience, Room 140 Weeks Hall

Agenda: Have you ever wanted to know where the closest mammoth fossil was? Needed to track changing plant distributions through the Quaternary? Wanted to find somewhere to archive your digital fossil data? Needed a DOI for your data records? Or have you just wanted to hang out with a bunch of friendly folks who like talking about good data management? Then the Neotoma half-day workshop is for you! We will provide an overview of the premier global multi-proxy paleoenvironmental database for the Plio-Pleistocene, showcase tools such as Tilia, the Neotoma Explorer and the new neotoma2 R package, and let you know all the great ways to engage with the global Neotoma community.

Leaders: Simon Goring (UW-Madison), Jack Williams (UW-Madison)

Registration Fees: none - contact Simon Goring to make reservation

Sedimentary Ancient DNA: Introduction and Current Advances

Type: Pre-meeting workshop

Date: June 7th, 1:00pm-5:00pm

Location: Department of Geoscience, Room 140 Weeks Hall

Agenda: Ancient DNA extracted from sediments (sedaDNA) is revolutionizing our understanding of biodiversity responses to past environmental change. This workshop will provide an introductory overview to interested Quaternary students and scientists about the current state of the field. We will introduce key concepts and best practices for the application of sedaDNA to a variety of research themes in Quaternary science. No background in ancient or environmental DNA required.

Leaders: Sarah Crump (UC-Santa Cruz), Jack Williams (UW-Madison)

Pickup and Drop off Location: Outside the Pyle Center on Landgon St.

Agenda: This trip will highlight recent Quaternary studies in Central Wisconsin. Topics will include speleothem climatic proxy records, late Cenozoic drainage reorganization, cosmogenic and radiocarbon ages that constrain the extent of MIS 3 and 2 glacial ice, landscapes formed by the MIS 2 Green Bay Lobe, and geoarchaeology. Stops will include Cave of the Mounds, Devil’s Lake State Park, and Aztalan State Park.

Leaders: J. Elmo Rawling III, Eric Carson, John Attig, Sissel Schroeder, Ian Orland, Cameron Batchelor, Shaun Marcott, Luke Zoet, and Dave Mickelson
