The Clean

Team

Welcome to our site, we will be working on COASTAL POLLUTION.

transdisciplinary theme:

An inquiry into the natural world and its laws; the interaction between the natural world (physical and biological) and human societies; how humans use their understanding of scientific principles; the impact of scientific and technological advances on society and on the environment.

My name is Carolyn and I am an eleven year old girl. I’m an only child, and my family moves a lot because of my Dad’s job. I was born in Virginia, U.S.A. but I only lived there until I was two years old. Now I live in Windhoek, Namibia, and go to a very nice school.

If I am Carolyn, then I have to like books. Actually, I don’t like books. I love them. I also like playing soccer, running around, swimming, and riding my scooter. But, along with that, I also take interest in sewing, baking, drawing, and making things. My favorite hobbies are probably reading and acting.

Like my parents, I’m American, but I have German and Irish ancestry. I have six aunts, six uncles, and seventeen cousins! Some of them are step-cousins and half-cousins.

I hope that you enjoyed learning about me.

My name is Gizelle. I am 11 years old and was born in Namibia, Windhoek. I was born on November 12 2009. I only have one sibling named Caleb. My mom and dad were both born in Namibia, but in different towns. My mom was born in Walvis Bay and my dad was born in Windhoek. The pets that I have are a parrot named Polly and a dog named Skye.

My hobbies are horse riding and gymnastics. I practice these as afternoon activities. Netball is an afternoon activity offered at school. I like horses and dislike being alone, I will only be alone when I want to be.

My name is Lilian, I am an 11 year old girl from Windhoek, Namibia. I am a student from Windhoek International School. Since I was young I have always loved animals. I always wanted to become a vet so that I can work with animals. As I’ve gotten older I have changed my interests and as of now I would like to become a firefighter.

I live with my parents and 1 older sister. I have a half sister from my dad's side, she comes over sometimes but she lives with her mom. My sister and I don’t really talk to each other but sometimes we will play Roblox or Minecraft together.

I have a type of Anemia called hereditary spherocytosis or HS, it’s when the blood cells have an abnormal shape, for example a square instead of an oval. I had to get many blood transfusions and there were a lot of nights I had to go to the hospital because I needed blood. When I was six I had to get my spleen removed and now I am healthy.

Carolyn:

Questions:

What are some of the causes of Coastal Pollution? Sewage can get into the ocean in many ways, but cruise ships can be a big factor of this. When the sewage meets the beach, it can mess with the ecosystem, because it is dirty. Another reason is oil spills. Sometimes oil and natural gases can erupt in the ocean. Then, the fish can eat/drink it, and then the fish die, then they wash up on the beach, and the dead fish is polluting the beach.

Where is there the most Coastal Pollution? The Pacific Ocean, to date, is the ocean with the most Coastal Pollution. The Great Pacific Garbage Patch is a gigantic patch of trash in the middle of the ocean. It is larger than Texas! (Texas is really big, I lived there.)

How can we save the environment from the effects of Coastal Pollution? We can go to the beach and clean up, and we can also use fewer plastic items. Being sure to put your trash in a bin and not on the ground can help save the Coastal Environment by having fewer pieces of trash on the beach.

Have some environments died because of Coastal Pollution? Yes. Some environments' (mainly coastal ones) plants and animals are affected by the harmfulness of Coastal Pollution. The Coastal Pollution can get into the water in that area, and then the whole area gets destroyed. The main reasons for this are humans and animals. Kamilo beach in Hawaii is nicknamed "Plastic Beach" because of how much litter there is.

Where are the most vulnerable places to Coastal Pollution? One of the vulnerable places is the Gulf of Mexico because there once was a gigantic oil spill there in 2010. It was actually the largest oil spill in the United States! That is one of the vulnerable places because of what happened. Eleven workers died, and so did a ton of sea creatures.

Gizelle:

What action can I take to change the conditions of the coastal environments?

  • Stop using plastic.

  • Recycle more.

  • Make your own beach cleanups.

  • Stop using objects containing microbeads. (Microbeads are tiny pieces that contain plastic, and that can injure the animals).

How is coastal pollution is changing the ecosystems?

The ocean is gathering up a lot of

chemicals from the trash and that can

cause health problems to ecosystems.

Fish are dying or having health problems and when trash floats past them, they think it is food and they might eat it.If the sea creatures eat it they won’t be able to roam free.

How can we change people's perspective on coastal pollution?

Ask/interview others if they want to

help us with the beach clean up. Show

others what we do for the ocean and

maybe they will start to save the ocean.

How can we change sea creatures lifes to make it better from ocean pollution?

  • Don’t take harmful products to the beach.

  • Fix the pollution on the coastal environments.

What will happen when we don’t stop polluting the oceans?

The sea levels will rise. Sea creatures will

keep migrating and dying. It is causing health

problems for humans and sea creatures life’s by eating trash and when the humans catch one of the sea creatures the humans eat it and can get sick from the chemicals in the plastic/trash.

I had an interview with Mr. Naude Dreyer because he helps different animals, but mostly seals.and it went really well. We all got really good information for our questions.

My questions and answers.

  1. Do you only save seals or other animals?

They do find a lot of different animals, not just seals.

  1. Why did you choose to save seals from pollution?

Animals start choking on the plastic and are dying.

  1. What are ways to save our ecosystems?

Pick up all the plastic and trash to take home and throw it away. Use reusable bags and bottles.

Lilian:

How can we save ocean animals?

  1. Don’t waste water.

  2. Try and support organizations that work to protect the ocean.

  3. Make sustainable choices.

  4. Throw your trash in the bin, not the ground.

How can we spread awareness on coastal pollution?

We can spread awareness by putting up fliers and posters around town, we can also put up posters at the beach or at a lake.

We can talk to crowds about it like in a park or we could use different ways to get people's attention.

How does pollution make you feel in general?

It makes some people feel sad and emotional but angry at the same time.

People also feel like they are being useless and that they can not do anything about it.

What are the effects of polluting the ocean

The effects can be the animal food chain breaking by one animal dying out such as turtles, then sharks then so on.

It can also make the ocean level higher. levels even at high tide, because of this animals are losing their homes and coral reefs are dying. They lose their food by animals migrating to another coral reefs, which is how animals lose their food.

Action: board game

Board game instructions link

Card key:

Red card=bad

Green card=good

Yellow card=mystery

Blue card=normal

Items:

  1. Paper

  2. Dice

  3. Art supplies

  4. Cards (printed out)

  5. Players (made out of the 3-D pen)

Instructions:

  1. Roll the dice

  2. Pick a card

  3. Do what the cards say until you get to the end.

Board game instructions

In the beginning of the game you first have to pick your team. Once you have your team you have to roll the dice, whoever has the highest roll goes first.

  1. Red card is a bad decision

  2. Green card is a good decision

  3. Yellow card is mystery, with either red green or a question card

  4. Blue is a neutral color so nothing happens when you land on it

In the end whoever is the furthest in the game wins.

Gizelle:
Thank you Ms. Jan for taking your time to be our mentor. Thank you for giving us ideas and leading us into a great exhibition.

Lilian:
Dear Ms Jan,

Thank you so much for agreeing to be our mentor for this past month, you have made this journey so much more manageable. from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

Carolyn:
Ms. Jan,

Thank you very much for being our mentor. You were very kind to us and encouraged the group. Without you, our exhibition wouldn't be as great. Thank you for guiding us along this journey.

Gizelle:
I am proud of the effort that I put into my research. I am proud of my self for managing my group and being kind to them.

Lilian:

I am proud of how well I did my research with my group mates. I am proud of how much effort I put in my research, and to make it look presentable.

Carolyn:

I am proud of how much information I have obtained. I feel that I have a lot of information to present, and that people will understand more. I made the information from just little notes into paragraphs.

Gizelle's reflection:

  1. What can I do better next time?

I can focus more on my work and not fool around.

  1. What did you enjoy most about exhibition?

I enjoyed learning new stuff about coastal pollution. I also enjoyed working with my group even though they always fighted I still had a great time.

  1. What did you find challenging?

Telling my group to stop fighting.

Lilian's reflection: during this month of exhibition I learnt a lot about the ocean, I learnt how to take care of the ocean.

I also learnt that working in a group takes a lot of effort, depending on who you are working with.

what I wish I did different:

  1. I wish I co-oparateWhat thank you better with my group mates

  2. I would focus more on my work and not play around as much

  3. I will try to not be as scared and anxious.

Carolyn's Reflection:

  1. What can I do better next time?

I can get all my work done quickly.

  1. What did you enjoy most about exhibition?

I enjoyed putting the information onto this site page.

  1. What did you find challenging?

What I found challenging was getting all my work and not arguing with my group.

Conclusions

Carolyn's Conclusion:

By researching into this topic, I feel as if a new door has been opened. It has taught me that this world has its good and its bad; its light and its dark.

By knowing that this horrid thing is really happening, I feel that it is my job to help. Everyone needs to play their part to create a better world, one where the environment is clean and healthy.

I feel that researching into this, it has enlightened my senses. It is as if the world has opened up to me. As if the world showed me its secrets.

My line of inquiry was “How Pollution Began.”

In conclusion, researching the topic of Coastal Pollution, I have come to one thing: that we can save the oceans and their beaches, but only if we try our hardest. If we see the mess that we have made, it only makes sense if we try to make it right.

Gizelle's conclusion:

What I think of coastal pollution:

I think coastal pollution is horrible. It kills animals and makes humans get sick. What we can do to stop coastal pollution is: Use reusable bags and bottles. Take action and pick up trash when you see some. My group's idea is to make a board game to inspire others to take action. I learned that saving the ocean is not going to happen by itself. Others have to put in their input to save the ecosystems and oceans.

Lilian's conclusion:

In conclusion, coastal pollution has a negative effect on the planet. I have learnt that polluting the coast does not only affect the ocean animals, it also affects us as humans. Our interview helped us a lot with questions and to get a deeper understanding. So if you would like to be a part of the world that helps the ocean, start at home by recycling and not using as much plastic.
