Weekly Highlights
Kindness is a daily hallmark of the West Island School community, and Kindness Week provided a wonderful opportunity to focus that spirit. This week brought our community together through small gestures of appreciation and significant charitable efforts.
Our students showed outstanding generosity across all charitable initiatives, while also embracing the daily activities with enthusiasm. They shared positive messages across the campus and directed their kindness toward the planet by participating in the Sustainable Swap Shop.
Yoga instructor Garima, a WIS parent, shared her passion for yoga through a session full of energising movements and mindfulness with our staff.
A group of enthusiastic Year 10 students showcased their contribution by interviewing staff members, while our Head Students and Post-16 students organised delightful treats for a tea party honouring our support staff. Please read their quotes to see how much they enjoyed and appreciated the gesture.
Thank you to everyone who took part and made this such a memorable week of community spirit. Congratulations to the students who received the Kindness Certificates for going above and beyond to demonstrate empathy and kindness this week.
On Wednesday Evening, our Auditorium welcomed parents, students, staff and ESF representatives for an open rehearsal of the School Musical: Into the Woods Junior. Participants fully immersed themselves into the creative processes and are looking forward to the shows on Wednesday, 3 December and Thursday, 4 December.
This week, our Music Department welcomed bass player Mr Marcel Pusey from Bassistry Music, London. With expert guidance, our Year 7 students explored Latin American music, while Years 8-13 collaborated on songwriting. Students were greatly inspired, learning about global music and composition.
Last weekend, 17 WISMUN students showcased their diplomatic skills at the two-day DGSMUN conference. Guided by the theme 'Empowering Echoes' – celebrating the legacies of the past while shaping the future, they involved themselves in lively debates, crafting POIs, and finding solutions to global issues by writing and voting on resolutions.

Building on the initial progress of his AI study tool, Notewise, Year 11 student Bob has launched a powerful new feature: the AI Past Paper Marker.
This innovative addition was developed directly in response to feedback from student users seeking more effective ways to practice past papers. The AI Past Paper Marker enables users to upload their answers and the corresponding mark scheme to receive clear indications of where they can progress.
The tool provides actionable insights into the specific areas for improvement, effectively showing students what effort they have to make to boost their grades. Watch the demonstration video is available to find out more.
Note on Access: This study tool is available free of charge. Usernames and email addresses are collected upon registration for future feedback and refinement.

Our commitment to guiding aspiring medics continues to grow, with over 80 participants joining our Medical Pathways Programme webinar hosted in late October. We were excited to discuss this aspirational field and key entry pathways with our parents and students. We look forward to exploring the medical pathways further with our aspiring medics throughout the year.
This past Wednesday, the Hong Kong Shark Foundation Ambassadors hosted an engaging lunchtime talk. It was a fantastic opportunity for our students to learn more about the organisation’s mission and the importance of service. Students were surprised to hear about how shark meat is present in some fish and chips and how hundreds of millions of sharks are killed annually. The Year 12 students are excited to collaborate with the organisation again and look forward to hosting more inspiring talks in the future.
Our students were delighted to welcome Professor Kathy Cheah from HKU’s School of Biomedical Sciences and gain insightful knowledge in developmental genetics, bone development and regenerative medicine. Students are keen to work on their research skills and global networking after this talk.
After more than a year of planning and preparation, our first Horizons Week trip—the South Africa Conservation Team—has departed. Eighteen students are off to South Africa to participate in a vital conservation project in the Kruger National Park.
No matter the activity our students are participating in next week, we hope they embrace the challenge, find their purpose, and return inspired to realize their potential.
