ELAR 8

Class overview

ELAR incorporates listening, speaking, reading, writing, and thinking through the seven interconnected strands of "developing and sustaining foundational language skills; comprehension; response; multiple genres; author's purpose and craft; composition; and inquiry and research" (Texas Administrative Code). In this class we will focus on academic oral expression and comprehension, reading, writing and expression. These elements will spiral through the curriculum and be touched on many times with increasingly complex texts and expectations. We will try to engage each day in academic conversation, meaningful reading, reflective writing, and creative, critical thought. We do this because we know that "In order for students to become thinkers and proficient speakers in science, social studies, mathematics, fine arts, language arts and reading, and career and technical education, they must have multiple opportunities to practice and apply the academic language of each discipline" (Fisher, Frey, & Rothenberg, 2008) taken from the Texas Administrative Code

About me

Hello! This year begins my 26th year of teaching. I have been to several schools teaching and coaching., and now I am so excited to be here in Winters, TX!! This is a homecoming for my family. My husband Ed was born here and graduated from Winters High School....more than a few years ago. We are happy to be close to family and to begin a new chapter in our lives. We have moved from San Antonio, TX - home of the Alamo, the Spurs, and so many other wonderful things. Though I will miss my home of 20 years, I am eager to embrace the warm and friendly folks here in Winters. Together we will have a great year! Welcome back!
