Classroom News

This website will be updated Monday-Friday mornings and again on Friday afternoon. Please check it then for any new information. As always, if you have any questions or concerns please email me at

SNACKS: We are having one snack a day at 2:15 p.m. Please remember that items may not have any nuts and follow the snack guidelines in the Parent Handbook. Thanks! Snacks should also be "Brain Food". Please do not send in candy, cupcakes, or other sugar-loaded treats.

AVID Planners: The purpose of the planners is to help the students learn good homework habits AND teach responsibility by having them be responsible for having them signed each night and return them to school every day in their homework folder. Please help your child with this if you can. Students will get 1 point for their reading grade each day they have it returned and initialed by an adult. Most weeks that will be 4 points for nightly reading homework, Mondays-Thursdays. I will collect the planners on Friday. This planner is sent home on Friday so that your student can see next week's spelling list as soon as possible if they's like to practice. However, homework on the weekend is optional:)

AR Book Bags: These should be coming home each night and returned every day with your child. They should be reading a book in their AR level. Once they finish a book, they are expected to take an AR test. If they get an 80% or above (passing grade), they will earn a keynote from me. Right now the expectation is for each student to take at least one test a week. AR books can be from my library, the school or public library, or from home. To check the AR level of a book go to

AR testing time: We have limited time during the day to take tests, so it is important that each student uses their independent time wisely. Each day from 8-8:15 students can take tests, or anytime they are finished with their work and there is enough time to log in and test. There should also be time during WIN class a couple times a week. If your student needs help remembering, please send them with a note for me and I will do my best to get it taken ASAP.

WIN groups: WIN (What I Need) These grade level groups are flexible and are re-evaluated every 6-8 weeks.

Scholastic activation code is MZVP8 or you can search by my name, Kelley Hoover, to find my account. Ordering books for your child can help build that love of reading and Scholastic provides books at a very low prices. By ordering books from using my code, it adds points into our classroom where we can earn prizes, and I can order new books for our classroom library.

Daily homework for 2nd grade is:

  • Reading - 20 min
  • Math Facts - 5 minutes
  • Practice Spelling Words - 10 minutes (tests on Thursdays)

Morning Drop Off Supervision

Students who are eating a school breakfast will be allowed into the cafeteria at 7:30 a.m. We have a large number of students who are arriving at school between 7:30 - 7:45 a.m. who are not eating breakfast. They are just hanging out in the cafeteria. Our drop-off time for students who are not eating breakfast is 7:45 a.m.. We have been making announcements to students every day this week that beginning on Monday after Thanksgiving break, students who arrive before 7:45 a.m. and are not eating breakfast will not be allowed to enter into the cafeteria. There is no supervision in the front of the building or in the backyard until 7:45 a.m.. Please make other arrangements in the morning for your child if they are not eating breakfast.
