Our Spiritual, Moral, Social and Cultural focus for the week...
Happiness
In this week's assemblies we have discussed how we can affect our own happiness with the choices we make. This is linked to the Heartsmart work on mental health. The teaching unit called Don't Hold On To What's Wrong encourages children to think about positive things, rather than focussing on the negative. By reflecting on the things we are grateful for in life, we can literally train our brains to be happier.
PCSO visit to Reception
This week PCSO Di Wiggins and one of her colleagues visited the children in Reception. They were able to ask questions about the police, and even got to sit in the car and hear the siren!
Year 5 & 6 football tournament
Congratulations to all of the players in the Key Stage 2 football tournament on Wednesday. The children represented the school really well in a local league against stiff competition from other schools. Depsite this, the children played with excellent spirit, enthusiasm, and showed themselves to be excellent team players.
Brass tuition in Badgers class
Badgers are getting to grips with their newly acquired brass instruments. Lesson one’s focus has been on holding the instruments correctly and attempting to get a sound out of them! Lots or raspberries! The lucky parents get to supervise the children practising at home!
All children in school receive 10 brass lessons with free loans of an instrument during Key Stage 2 as part of our wider music provision. The children will perform in a concert to parents on Monday 22nd of July.
Earth Day 2024
Children in Foxes and Owls class have been learning about the Global Goals as part of Earth Day this week. The children learned about how plastic bottles can be reused as planters, to reduce the amount of waste going to landfill sites, as well as understanding about caring for plants and their environment. The recycled planters will be placed in the Reception children's outdoor area to add a little more colour!
Could you be eligible for Free School Meals/ Pupil Premium?
If you are unsure if you qualify then please go to www.cheshirewestandchester.gov.uk , Schools & Education, then Free School Meals where you can apply on-line. The on-line eligibility checker will notify you straight away if you do or do not qualify.
We need to ensure that all parents/guardians that have a statutory entitlement to a free school meal complete the on-line form. They will then be able to confirm whether the school is entitled to claim the pupil premium for your child. The Pupil Premium is extra money given to school to spend on resources such as one to one tutoring, extra curricular clubs and school trips (Wincham contributes 50% towards the cost). For 2023/2024 this is £1455 per pupil (Primary School). Funding is based on children registered for a free school meal, further reinforcing the importance of making sure all those who qualify are actually registered.
Your child may be entitled to receive free school meals if you are entitled to receive one of the following:
Income Support
Income-based Jobseeker’s Allowance
Income-related Employment and Support Allowance
Support under Part VI of the Immigration and Asylum Act 1999
The Guarantee element of State Pension Credit
Child Tax Credit, provided you are not entitled to Working Tax Credit and have an annual income that does not exceed £16,190.
Universal Credit (Provided you have an annual net earned income of no more than £7,400).
Household Support Vouchers are also issued during most school holidays to support families in receipt of Free School Meals, so you may be missing out on this additional help during these economically challenging times.
It is really important that you complete the online form to help make sure your child’s school is funded as well as possible. If you cannot apply on-line you can telephone Free School Meals on 0300 123 7039.

Foodbank support
Our Safeguarding Team (Mr Boot, Mr Bounds and Miss Boag-Munroe) can refer to the Foodbank. This is an anonymous service.
Visiting a food bank might seem daunting, but you’ll get a warm welcome in a safe environment, a listening ear from trained volunteers, and a food parcel.
Food bank volunteers are there to help. They will take the time to listen and make sure you feel comfortable during your visit to the food bank. They are specially trained to identify and offer practical guidance to help tackle the reasons for your referral to the food bank and will work with you to make sure you have access to the support you need.
