Mr. Reese Holahan
Mr. Reese Holahan is a Buffalo‑based tenor, voice teacher, and scholar known for his vocal lyricism, stylistic flexibility, and dramatic presence. On February 26th and 27th, Mr. Holahan visited Transit Middle and East High to teach a vocal clinic to all the male singers.
A versatile performer, he connects with audiences through opera, musical theatre, oratorio, folk, and chamber music. His professional credits include appearances with Charlottesville Opera, Shenandoah Conservatory Opera, Arts Chorale of Winchester, The Hillman Opera, and the Western New York Chamber Orchestra. Holding an MM in Voice Pedagogy from Shenandoah University and degrees in Voice Performance (BM) and Communication Disorders & Sciences (BS) from SUNY Fredonia, he maintains an active schedule performing and teaching in the region. He also serves as a staff singer with Westminster Choir and Westminster Schola and is currently accepting new students at Community Music School and in his private studio.
Male voices are an important part of any chorus because they add depth and help balance the sound. When they’re developed well, they can make the whole group sound stronger and more complete. Having Mr. Holahan coming in was really helpful for that. He is a skilled singer himself and taught skills that are an amazing benefit to the chorus members. It was a lovely experience for a professional to help with our skills.
Mr. Holahan focused primarily in the area of breathing abilities. He introduced the idea of minding the expansion of our ribs when we breathe, and how some slight movement when we begin to sing can help increase our breath size. During his lesson, he made sure to include all of the guys equally. Nearing the end, he had us sing the opening sequence of the song “The Lion Sleeps Tonight” by splitting the group in two and creating a canon. Finally, to run out the remaining time, we played a “follow‑the‑leader”-esq game that involved making a small tune, about 4–6 beats, and the whole class would repeat it. This is what we finished the class with.
Mr. Holahan was a friendly and informative teacher, and the experience was made possible thanks to the Williamsville Music Boosters.
