Remote Learning Privacy & Compliance
April 1, 2020
Dear Faculty, Staff, Students and Parent(s)/Guardian(s),
As a result of Governor Baker’s recent decision to extend school closures through Monday May 4, 2020, we would like to provide you with information about our plan to keep your children engaged in meaningful learning experiences. The District has carefully considered various remote learning options and has selected Zoom for Education, Class Dojo, Google Suite/Classroom or Canvas based upon factors including available features, reliability, ease of use/access, and privacy/confidentiality protections. All four tools, when used with school accounts, comply with state and federal regulations that protect student privacy (FERPA, COPPA, CIPA, MA Student Records law). The District will continue to monitor the platforms to ensure that they continue to meet expectations with regard to student safety and privacy according to state and federal guidelines. During this extended school closure, the Mount Greylock Regional School District will continue to take all reasonable measures to preserve your privacy and the privacy of your child, and each of our educators will continue to maintain the privacy of your child’s student record information.
When in a Zoom for Education, Class Dojo, Canvas or Google Suite/Classroom, your child will be able to see the names of other members in the class on the "students" tab, including family members if they are invited into the Classroom. In a general online Classroom, there is no distinction between special education and non-special education students. With our specially designed classrooms, all student members are special education students therefore; any invited guest will be able to see the class list. However, disability and IEP information remains confidential. It is important for all parent(s)/guardian(s) and students participating in these online learning opportunities to understand that their participation is conditioned upon agreeing to comply with all applicable State and Federal Laws. Accordingly, only those invited to participate in a Zoom for Education, Class Dojo, Canvas or Google Suite/Classroom may do so, and any recording, saving, or sharing of the meeting with others is prohibited.
As we navigate our way through these difficult and unique times, we want to thank all families for their patience and understanding. Our goal is to ensure that everyone has access to meaningful learning opportunities offered by the Mount Greylock Regional School District, and we will work with families to ensure successful implementation. If your child does not have access to online connectivity or a device capable of accessing Google Classroom, Class Dojo or Zoom for Education, or is in need of technical support, please contact your child's principal who can assist you with these concerns.

COVID-19 Virtual Platform Opt-Out
April 5, 2020
Dear Parents and Guardians,
As a result of Governor Baker’s recent decision to extend school closures through Monday, May 4, 2020, we would like to provide you with information about our plan to keep your children engaged in meaningful learning experiences provided by their special education teachers and related service providers. In an effort to maintain continuity with school, the Mount Greylock Regional School District has asked special education teachers and related service providers to create a virtual platform using Zoom for Education, Class Dojo, or Google Suite/Classroom where they can share resources and enrichment activities with students and families.
We would like to address student confidentiality concerns that you may have with using the Google classroom platform:
1. Disability/IEP information for each student remains confidential.
2. Assignments/activities can be individualized and/or modified for students with confidentiality.
3. It is important to note that any members of the class WILL be able to see the names of other members in the class on the "students" tab, including family members if they are invited into the virtual classroom
To simplify, in a general education virtual classroom, through one of the above approved platforms there is no distinction between student members. With our specially designed google classrooms or class dojo all student members are special education students therefore; any invited guest will be able to see the class members or at least their names. However, disability and IEP information remains confidential.
As we navigate our way through these difficult and unique times, we want to be able to provide your student with the educational support that they need. After much consideration we feel that at this time the Zoom for Education, Class Dojo or Google Suite/Classroom platform will be the best platforms to meet the needs of your children. If you do not want your child to be included in special education Zoom Education, Class Dojo or Google Suite/Classroom and wish to opt-out, please notify Patrick Priester at email@example.com or your child’s special education liaison, and we will determine an alternative approach for providing resources and enrichment for your child. Please know that the needs of your children are very important to us, and we are always available to discuss any concerns that you may have.
