Message from the Principal:

Good afternoon everyone, and welcome to this week’s newsletter.

We have lots to share with you as always as it’s been a packed fortnight!

We have included a list of dates on this edition of the newsletter so that you have plenty of notice for upcoming events this term. As you will see it’s rather busy but obviously not all children will be involved in all events. We will send details of key events nearer the time but we thought it would be helpful for you to pop on your calendar when the main ones are.

You will see that we will be celebrating the King’s Coronation on Friday 12th May. This should be a fantastic celebration and will involve a WBJ street party outside on our playground. Our fantastic cook will be preparing a special afternoon tea- style lunch served in a Union Jack! Please can you let our office know if your child does not normally have school dinners but would like one on this day. The cut off for notifying the office is Tuesday 9th May

Can I just remind parents of year 5 and 6 pupils that have still not sent in the size they would like for their child’s jumper / hoody to do so as soon as possible as we cannot take any further requests after next week.

A letter was sent to all year 6 pupils yesterday about the arrangements for SATs week. If you have not received this please ask your child, and let us know if you need a replacement. Can I just remind other parents that Breakfast Club during SATs week (Tues 9th - Fri 12th May) for year 3-5 children will move to the music room for that week only.

A leaflet has been given to year 6 pupils tonight from the North East Lincolnshire Public Health Team about the dangers of Vaping. This is for all year 6 pupils in our area and we would appreciate taking the time to read and discuss this with your child.

I think that’s all of my messages for this week. Please enjoy looking at what the children have been up to, and have a lovely bank holiday weekend.

Mrs Sargent

Principal

Take a look at what we have been up to...

YEAR 3

Year 3 have settled back into the Summer term fantastically and we have all been working hard on our new learning. We have read a new book called the Barnabus Project and we created our own alternative endings. We are currently reading The Butterfly Lion and we are gripped to find out what happens in the end. Will Bertie finally find the white lion? We'll find out at the end of this week!

During the afternoons we have started our new topic all related to animals and we have completed our ICT days this term where we learned how computers work. Please look at our Twitter page for more information.

YEAR 4

Year 4 thoroughly enjoyed the book study week about 'The Day the crayons quit. The children learnt about the key features of persuasive letters and wrote a letter from the main character, Duncan, persuading the crayons to return.

D.T. week was a great success. The children have used all their electrical systems knowledge to create a Themed Steady hand game. We researched a variety of games that use an electrical component, created a detailed, accurate design explaining choices and what we need to do to be successful. Making the game encouraged lots of team work, collaboration, problem solving and perseverance.

YEAR 5

We have begun our exciting new topic, River and Oceans' already we are really excited and asking lots of big questions, such as 'Why is the sea salty?', 'Why don't the oceans evaporate?' and 'Where did the oceans come from in the first place?'

This fact amazed us- if you removed all the salt from the oceans, it would cover the land with a layer of 166m thick!

Last week we loved reading our picture book, 'The Lost Happy Endings' we are now reading a beautiful novel called 'The Lost Whale' which we predict will be about, friendship, adventure and of course a lost whale!

In maths, we are learning how to calculate, estimate and measure angles- we have used protractors and measured to the nearest degree.

D and T last week was great fun, we enjoyed working in our teams to design, plan and make our own astronaut cereal bar. We made sure that the bar was tasty and also nutritional.

YEAR 6

Year 6 have been working really hard on their revision and preparations for SAT's which are fast approaching on Tuesday 9th May! The children have been writing a persuasive letter to a local MP encouraging them to act upon the issues of global warming and rising sea levels and the impact that this could have on Cleethorpes. We are really proud of the dedication and hard work of all of the year 6 children, keep going! Remember parents that there is a free breakfast club that all children need to attend during SAT's week- please note this down in your diary.

Mini Police Scheme

At William Barcroft Junior School we have welcomed Humberside Police to deliver sessions to 10 of our pupils.

The children have all pledged the below:

The Mini Police Promise

"I promise to always do my best to represent my school, Humberside Police and my Community in my role as a Mini Police Officer."

This week PCSO Tina Brack, Alison Sapcote and Cadet Matthews delivered a road safety awareness workshop where the children even got chance to go inside a police vehicle!

ICT day

We had our ICT day in Year 3! We began our day with an esafety discussion, recognising who is safe to be in our online community. After that, we learnt all about how computers work, the difference between hardware and software and then we created slides and graphics to show off what we had learnt.

Girls football tournament

On Wednesday 19th April, our Barcroft Lionesses took to the stage once more in a thrilling tournament at Oasis Academy Wintringham on the Grimsby Town Academy's pristine pitches. There were eight participating schools so the tournament was in a league format where we got to play everyone there. This included ourselves as well as: Wyber's Academy, Reynolds Primary, Humberstone Cloverfields, Enfield Primary, Pilgrim Primary, Signhills Primary and Humberstone C of E Primary. It was 3 points for a win, 2 points for a draw, 1 point for scoring loss and 0 points for a non-scoring loss.

Game 1: William Barcroft 0 v 1 Wybers Academy

A tight contest as our girls showed some excellent defending throughout this game. Wybers were constantly attacking in this game as we struggled to get out our half but Kadie kept us well in this game with some outstanding saves. A fair result in the end against a tough opponent.

Game 2: Humberstone Cloverfields 0 v 2 William Barcroft

A fantastic display by our lionesses. Alexise scored 2 brilliant goals to give us all 3 points in a dominant performance. Our girls worked their socks off and didn't give the opponent a second on the ball. A late penalty was awarded to Cloverfields, which was saved fantastically by Kadie. Cloverfield's PE staff was full of praise for our team and their performance.

Game 3: Signhills Primary 2 v 0 William Barcroft

The Barcroft lionesses gave a good account of themselves against the competition's winners. Kadie pulled off a fantastic save which was even applauded by the opposition manager as he said it was "the best double save I had ever seen!".

Game 4: Humberstone C of E 2 v 1 William Barcroft

Another close contest and one that could have gone either way. Alexise gave William Barcroft the lead before Humberstone C of E equalised. Both teams pushing for the winner but it was Humberstone C of E that found it late on. Not all doom and gloom as we received a point for a scoring loss.

Game 5: Pilgrim Primary 0 v 1 William Barcroft

The Barcroft lionesses had some unfinished business with Pilgrim Primary. These two drew 0-0 last time they met at the tournament in October for a 3rd place finish. The girls put in another brilliant display as we came out 1-0 winners. Alexise giving us the winning goal and bagging 3 points. Pilgrim had their chances but couldn't get past Kadie in goal.

Game 6: William Barcroft 0 v 1 Enfield Primary

The Barcroft lionesses put in another fantastic shift as this game was very close with both teams having lots of chances. Emily showed brilliant defending in this game, as she took a shot to the face, blocking it out for a corner. Enfield got the winning goal midway through.

Game 7: William Barcroft 3 v 1 Reynolds Primary

The best was saved until last in a thrilling game which had seen us dominate Reynolds. Alexise put us 1-0 with a brilliant strike before Reynolds equalised. This spurred the girls on and they reacted well to the setback. A great throw by Miley was took down well by Alexise who took a shot. This was saved by the keeper and Paige tapped in the rebound. Paige a minute later added her second and William Barcroft's third with a brilliant goal.

Overall, we finished 6th with 10 points and the girls showed great sportsmanship and respect towards the officials. Congratulations to Signhills, who were the winners. It's amazing to see the progress of all the William Barcroft girls and the fantastic journey they've been on this year.
