As part of our commitment to send every child into the world able and qualified to play their full part in the world, our school has an extensive personal development program. The aim of this program is to allow our students to develop as young people, equipped with a series of experiences, skills and characteristics that will allow them to be positive members of an ever changing world. This half-term at Thrybergh Academy, there are lots of opportunities for this to happen!
This half term there are lots of opportunities for students to work towards their bronze, silver or gold pledges in life skills, active citizenship and cultural experiences.
In addition to the above, there are lots of opportunities for students to work on pledges outside of school for example:
● Silver - Research your local area
● Gold - Research your family tree or family History
These are excellent opportunities for students to work towards their pledge certificates and to develop those key characteristics and traits.
Alongside our PD curriculum, we have an extensive careers program that is designed to give students the skills and knowledge they need to make informed choices when it comes to post 16 options. This half term there are opportunities for students to learn more about careers:
Careers in the curriculum - This half term, students will be talking about careers in the Art and ICT lessons.
Y11 Careers Day - On Friday 21st November, our year 11 students will be taking part in their final careers day of their schools journey. Students will be talking about post 16, employability skills and creating a CV
Y8 Oral Health Program - A group of our year 8 students are going to be trained by and working with specialists in the field of Oral Health to begin an oral health campaign across school
Access to Sheffield - A group of our year 9 students will be starting their access to Sheffield program this half term by meeting with mentors from the university.
There are always opportunities to link to careers, we have a fantastic careers team including a careers coordinator and advisor who are experts and always happy to support students.
At the beginning of this half term, two members of our student council from the Quality of Education committee attended a whole trust student council meeting. An opportunity to feedback on their work at Thrybergh Academy and to work collaboratively with other schools to make the overall experience of students across Wickersley Partnership Trust as positive as possible, and student led.
This half term, the focus is on the Environment committee. Our students have met and created a list of key concerns regarding our school's environment. They have an action plan of the half term which includes:
Collecting more student voice
Mapping out the outside bins in school
A recycling project to demonstrate the impact
Writing a letter to local government discussing recycling in schools
The council are also helping to organise our Christmas Concert where we will be inviting local Y5 students to join us for some festive cheer.
An important part of personal development is our extra curricular activities. These allow students to pursue their curiosities and passions as well as demonstrating their dedication and commitment. These qualities along with creativity are among the top characteristics admired by employers. Since returning to school in september, we have added some additional activities after school such as:
History podcast club
Technology Club
Philosophy Club
👈 Please see our full HT2 after school offer here
Please encourage your child to stay after school and attend one of our clubs, it helps towards their pledges and enhances the school experience. If there are any clubs your child is interested in what we do not currently offer, please contact school and let us know.
This year, our school has started a development journey. We are embarking on a journey to help our school improve and to build a ‘Culture of Kindness and Creativity.’ As part of this program, we are looking into ways to build opportunities for our students to express creativity. Whether that be through the pantomime, music, art or creative writing. Every lesson has the potential to enhance creativity.
If your child has done something creative at home, please tell us about it so that we can praise and celebrate this. We are at the very beginning of this journey and are very excited to see where it takes us!
Each half term, we work with our PSHE specialist to offer further personal development opportunities for our students. Students are asked to complete a survey on our bounce together platform. This half term, this was an Anti-Bullying survey. The data from this allows us to identify themes and areas of need throughout the school. Whether this is an individual child or the whole school. We then create a plan, invite students to interventions and take steps to improve our students' experience. This is all about supporting the welfare, wellbeing and development of students in our school.
At the heart of our personal development program is our Thrybergh Way. The Thrybergh Way contains all of the key qualities and characteristics that we believe every Thrybergh student should embody, qualities that will allow them to succeed beyond school. Each half term, are paying particular attention to certain elements of the Thrybergh Way. This half term, we are focusing on:
We are Ambitious - We know that each and every one of our students has endless potential and talent, we want to encourage all of our students to reach for the stars, have the mindset of a champion and know that they have the power to do good in this world
We support others around us - In line with anti-bullying week, we have been speaking with students a lot about choosing kindness. We want to ensure that students are empowered to look out for each other. At Thrybergh, we are one big team and want everyone to feel safe and welcome in our school
We are respectful and listen to others - Since returning in September, we have worked closely with students to talk about respect. This has included assemblies, year group workshops with Mr May and student voice exercises with the Student Council. It costs nothing to be respectful and our students demonstrated this excellently during our annual sponsored walk. The community feedback from the walk emphasised how respectful our young people were and we are incredibly proud of this
We will continue to work with our students and emphasise the importance of using their power for good. Choosing to be kind and respectful- creating a culture of Kindness across our school to make it a positive learning environment for everyone.
We are committed to keep you updated about the Personal Development opportunities at our school. If you have any questions about our program or have some expertise that you would like to offer our students to support our PD Curriculum then please contact Mrs Westmoreland.
