Mirrors, Windows & Sliding Glass Doors

This phrase was originally defined by Rudine Sims Bishop in 1990 in an article about choosing and using books in the classroom. Now this phrase is widely used by authors, publishers, advocates and librarians.

  • Mirrors- literature that reflects the diversity of our students, their backgrounds and experiences.

  • Windows- literature that offers all students a view of the diverse world we live in.

  • Sliding Glass Doors- students use their imagination to become a part of a world the author has imagined.
