The best adaptation of Dr. Seuss’s How the Grinch Stole Christmas is the 2000 version with Jim Carrey.
For the majority of people, it is the one they think of first when they hear the “Grinch”.
There are many moments throughout the film that are iconic and highly quoted. One that comes to my mind and I quote often immediately is “the-the-the-THE GRINCH.”
Carrey’s Grinch running joke throughout the film of self hatred created the majority of those iconic moments: “4:00 wallow in self pity…7:00 wrestle with my self-loathing. I’m booked!”
The movie also introduced a few new characters to the story. One prominent character is Martha May Whoevier, Grinch’s love interest.
She brings important back story to the Grinch’s character, and she also has her fair share of iconic moments as well, one being her Christmas light cannon.
Martha May also brings along the character of the mayor and creates a love triangle between the three.
The introduction to this love triangle happens at the newly introduced Cheer Mister. It was always one of my favorite scenes.
The love triangle brings in Grinch’s backstory and why he hates Christmas. In the flashback, the mayor bullies the Grinch out of jealousy when he gives a gift to Martha May.
All of these elements of the 2000 How the Grinch Stole Christmas is why it is the best adaptation of the original book by Dr. Seuss.
