The White County Public Library is ringing in the new year with a new group to add to the community. A monthly Dungeons & Dragons group is being launched for the teen demographic.
Dungeons and Dragons is a tabletop role-playing game where players create characters and work together to tell a story, using imagination, dice, and rules to go on adventures guided by a Dungeon Master.
It grew out of miniature war games and introduced the idea of players role-playing individual characters in a shared fantasy world.
Nick Gross, White County local, shared his thoughts on the game, “It allows you to do something that doesn’t waste your time because you’re using your imagination."
White County Library librarian Lily Light and her team organized this program in order to spark interest in D&D and provide a community within a community.
Light shared “other libraries, both metro and rural are having great success with this program.”
She followed up by saying, “this will get people engaged face-to-face, strengthening communication and critical thinking literacy.”
The intent of this new group is to bring creativity and storytelling into the environment.
The first gathering will be on January 12th from 4-5 p.m., and will have a focus on map-making and planning future quests that members of the group will participate in.
Snacks will be provided to those who attend and there is no experience needed.
Based on the outcome of the first meeting, future gatherings will extend depending on the campaign or multiple campaigns.
After the first meeting, members are expected to bring their own materials; however, said, “if there is enough interest, we [the library] will purchase some more of the materials so everyone can enjoy the program without worry or spending money.”
Any questions or concerns about the program can be made to the library at the number (931) 836-3613 or the email: teens@wtclibrary.org.
