As we turn our calendars and a new year begins, many people at White County High School reflect and think about what they want in the new 2026 year. New Year's resolutions have become a tradition rooted in the idea of self-improvement- setting goals that help individuals grow, change habits, or pursue something meaningful to them. Some of these goals are health, focusing on academics, or more.
Karly Tylka (‘27) said, “I made a new years resolution this year to get out of my comfort zone and plan lots of trips to go out on hikes.”
The new year is a fresh beginning for many as students get older and start new classes, some students looking forward to graduating and making their life decisions. While others are more focused on improving health, skills, or personal growth. For many student athletes and club members their New Year resolutions might be more focused on improving performance, showing leadership, and being more committed to their teams and organizations.
Tori Mabe (‘27) said, “ I want to spend less money this year and start my own savings account.”
New Year's resolutions can also he;lp students develop lifelong habits. Learning how to set goals, reflect on progress, and adapt when challenges arise are skills that extend far beyond high school. Even small improvements, such as keeping a planner or setting aside time, can have a lasting impact.
Many resolutions start strong, maintaining them throughout the year can be challenging though. Busy schedules, stress, and unexpected setbacks can cause students to lose focus. However, the new year reminds students that setbacks do not define failure. Revisiting goals and adjusting them when necessary can help keep resolutions realistic and meaningful.
As the year continues, New Year's resolutions service as a reminder of growth and possibility. Whether students are working toward academic success, personal well-being, or new opportunities, the new year offers a change to move forward.
