Group Art Projects

We worked in groups to make our versions of some well know art works. Do you recognise any famous pieces? We had to choose from different media in order to create the pieces. The hardest part was working together- sharing ideas, compromise, directing etc.- lots of valuable life and study skills!

Diocesan Schools Service

and Christchurch Cathedral Trip

Ten 6th Class pupils were lucky enough to get to go to the Diocesan Schools Service in November and while there, they got to take a tour of the Crypts underneath the Cathedral. Here is a written report from some of our class:

On Thursday 9th November we went to the annual Diocesan service in Christ Church Cathedral with Ms. Richards and Rev’d David. April. Deepa, Archie, Sebastian, Isaac, Colm, James, Joshua, Jamie and Ruby were chosen to go. The bus journey in was so much fun and we were all feeling excited! When we got there, I remember thinking how big the Cathedral was. When we arrived, we were given a guided tour of the Crypt, a museum downstairs in Christchurch. It used to even have it’s own pubs down there hundreds of years ago and a marketplace. We saw a mummified cat and rat that were preserved in the musical organ. We also got to dress up in tudor period costumes. That was so much fun! We then made our way back up to the cathedral for the service. The theme this year was ‘Let there be Light’. Half way through the service the lights went dark. We each were given a glow stick that we cracked at the same time and the room was filled with magnificent colours. When the service ended, we came back to school on the bus and were back in school by lunchtime. We all would definitely go again and would highly recommend it to Sixth Class next year.

Maths Masters Quiz

We were very proud of Lily, Dylan, James and Alex who represented our school in the Maths Masters Quiz held in St. Attracta's school recently. Here is a report from Lily and James:

Maths Masters Quiz in St. Attracta’s N.S.

I woke with butterflies in my stomach. Today was the day! It was Tuesday the 28th of November and we (Dylan, Alex, James, Lily) were all going to the Maths Master’s Quiz later today. I remember thinking we would make a really good team. We arrived into school with a super surprise waiting for us…our new Sixth Class hoodies had arrived so that was perfect timing! We definitely looked like Maths professionals. The clock struck 11 and that’s when it all started. Lily’s Mum drove us to St. Attracta’s where the competition was held and we met Ms. Barry there who gave us a ‘pep talk’ which included lots of ‘take your time’, ‘check your answers’ lots of ‘I am so proud of you all’. We were in a big hall with 19 other schools. There were six rounds of questions per round. It was very difficult but we worked really well as a team and had our own little system. We felt confident in our answers as the quiz went on. We had a break after round 3 and got a goodie bag with a chocolate bar, skittles, popcorn and a drink. We knew by round 6 that we hadn’t come first but we thought we did well and we had so much fun doing the quiz! In the end we got 32 out of 36 questions correct ranking us at 4th place. We each received a certificate of participation. It was really fun and a great experience.

We also enjoyed pairing up with the infants to complete some Maths activities over the week!

Trip to Killakee Christmas Tree Farm

Trip to Killakee Christmas Tree Farm

6th Class were delighted to be invited to visit Killakee Christmas Tree Farm for a tour recently. Some of the 6th Class parents very kindly provided lifts and Ms. MacLachlan went too.

When we arrived, we had a talk from Karen Morton, one of the farm owners, on how the farm works and how they manage it. She also told us about how long it takes the trees to grow- 7 to 10 years for the regular sized Christmas trees and some of them are even 30 years old. We then went on a scavenger hunt in groups and had to search for a number of things on our list like finding a red berry that wasn't holly and a deciduous tree. We had to find logs and name how old it was by counting the rings. Each ring represents a year of growth.

After we walked back up to the cabin, we were given our own saplings that we can plant and grow into Christmas. They are 3 years old now so they might be ready by the time we are in Transition Year! We got a great surprise when Rachel and the other mums produced hot chocolate, marshmallows, bars and jellies!

A big thank you to Emma Neil, Rachel Cron, Jill Moffett, Julian Girdham and Lindsay Delahunty and Nichola Hennigan for bringing us and to Rachel Cron for organising everything including the hot chocolate!

Leinster House and Museum Trip

6th Class trip to Leinster House and the Natural History Museum

One cold and particularly frosty morning in January, Sixth Class headed out bright and early for our much anticipated school trip. Bundled up with scarves, warm coats and woolly hats, we braved the icy weather. We were heading on a trip, no, not to the Alps but to the National Museum of Ireland and Leinster House. And what a trip it was!

We got a bus in and it was ‘a really nice bus at that’ noted Harley. We sang our usual repertoire of bus songs on the journey in, much to the delight of the bus driver! It wasn’t long before we arrived at the Museum. We eagerly departed our bus and were greeted at the entrance with an activity booklet... and a free pencil. The worksheet was a Winter Trail that we had to follow and fill in as we went on the tour. “I liked doing the trail, it was very entertaining” said Jamie,” There was so much to see but so little time”. “The best part of the tour was when we saw the gold rings from the Vikings” exclaimed Dylan. “I really enjoyed learning about the log boats that the Vikings would have used for fishing” added Ella.

Before long, we left the Vikings behind and headed next door to Leinster House where we met a lovely usher who gave us a wonderful tour and told us so many interesting facts. “I especially enjoyed the viewing gallery because we learned where everyone sits in the Dáil” said Sebastian. We even got to sit in the seats in the Seanad which was ‘such an honour’ said Ella. ‘Sitting in the government seats was also my favourite part’ said Tyler. “What a day, we learned so such about the History of the Dáil which was fascinating” enthused Florencia.

Additionally, “the building itself was very extravagant and beautiful” noted Daniel. “I was fascinated by the ceilings and chandeliers” said Grace. “It was so cool” said Harley “especially for me because I got to use the VIP elevator because of my crutches”. We met April’s Uncle, Neale Richmond TD, who brought us for snacks and drinks after the tour ‘He was so nice’ said Kaya. “He gave us each certificates from the Dáil” exclaimed Colm. I would definitely recommend this trip to Sixth Class next year’ said all of Sixth Class. In fact, we would all love to go again! “The only problem is that Ms. Barry now wants to run for Taoiseach’.

Sebastian Jenner (6th Class)

Take a look at some of the photos from our trip below!

Our Trip to the Dáil was a big hit. We have a Government system on our classroom so it was lovely to ses it in real life!

We loved sitting in the Seanad. We have government jobs in the classroom and we each are Ministers of Education/Health/Sport etc. We even get paid and hold cabinet meetings. We voted in our Taoiseach and heard wonderful speeches with some children even campaiging for others.

Tired but very happy after our trip!

We had lots of questions and Anto was an amazing guide!

We stopped for a photo during our guide with Anto!

We also went to the History Museum.

We did a Winter trail and got to explore!.

We learned about Hinduism and made  our own Mandalas using Diamond Art. It was tricky but we absolutely loved it!
