Your Task:

Write a 3-page (minimum) research paper about an issue that impacts citizens at the local, state or federal level.

Research Organizers:

Your 3-page minimum paper must include the following:

  • Double spaced, 12-point font, Times New Roman or Arial font only.

  • Header- Your name, teacher’s name, class period, and title of paper in the top left corner of the page.

  • Introduction- ½ page to 1 full page.  The last sentence of your introduction is your thesis statement.

      • Identify and define the issue;

      • State the Bill of Rights Amendment that is connected to this issue;

      • Provide historical background on the issue, including important court cases, policies, and laws related to the topic;

      • Explain how the issue impacts society; and

      • End introduction with a clear thesis statement.

  • Body paragraphs- 2 pages- one page for pro side; one page for con side

      • One full page: Explain the "pro" side of the issue with 3 "pro" reasons and evidence, data, quotes and statistics.  

      • One full page: Explain the "con" side of the issue with 3 "con" reasons and evidence, data, quotes and statistics.  

  • Conclusion- ½ page to 1 full page. 

      • Restate your thesis- which side of the issue do you support, pro or con?;

      • Summarize your three main points to be for or against the issue;

      • Offer policy recommendations for things that can be done at the local, state, and/or federal issue to address the problem.  

  • Works Cited- ½ page to 1 full page. 

      • Make "Works Cited" page its own page in your paper. 

      • Center the title “Works Cited” at the top of the page.

      • Arrange citations in alphabetical order. If there is no author, alphabetize the first word of the title.
