Playoffs Fall 2022
In the team's first inaugural UIL Season, the girl's team finished with an 8-3 record, and the boy's team finished with a 9-2 record.
In the first round of bi-district playoffs, both teams faced off against opponents they faced earlier in the regular season. The girls secured their first-ever UIL playoff win vs Vandegrift with an impressive 22-3 win. Junior Effie Castel led the way with 5 goals, and Junior goalie Vale Escalona had 15 saves for the Warriors. In their first game of the season, the boys had only beaten their first playoff opponent Waco-Midway by 2 and were nervous for this upcoming rematch. There was nothing to fear after the Warriors took an 11-1 lead going into the fourth and ended the game-winning 13-3. The offense was led by Junior captain Freddy Browarski who scored a season-high 11 goals and a defense anchored down by Sophomore goalie Cole Osborn who had 17 saves. Both teams moved on to Area.
Both teams now faced a new challenge playing Hays who had also won their first playoff games against their respective opponents. The girls kicked it off first with Junior captain Abby Horsey scoring 9 in Westwood's triumphant 20-4 win. Junior goalie Vale Escalona had 14 saves and Junior captain Matisse Cohen led the team in steals. The boys played directly after and also put on an impressive performance. 7 different Warriors scored goals for the boys and Sophomore goalie Cole Osborn recorded 14 more saves to solidify the boy's win. The team scored a season-high 25 goals and only allowed 9 to move on to the Regional Quarterfinals.
Both teams faced 2 teams they hadn't seen in the regular season who were both champions of their respective districts. The girls took on Waco-Midway in a highly anticipated game with Westwood's own principal watching in the stands. The girls kept it close at first but soon pulled ahead to defeat Waco Midway 15-7. Junior goalie Vale Escalona recorded a season-high 21 saves with 6 of the Warriors contributing to goals on offense. Junior captain Matisse Cohen solidified the defense with her season-high 9 steals vs Waco. The boy's team now had a tall task ahead facing the Anderson Trojans who had been one of the most dominant teams in the entire city. The stands were the most packed they had ever been ranging from parents all the way to Westwood having an entire student section to show up and support. Throughout the game, it had gone back and forth with Junior Captain Jack Benveniste scoring the opening goal and Freshman Caden Bradford and Junior Captain Freddy Browarski also adding points. Going into the fourth quarter the score was 9-9 with both teams putting in everything they had left. Quickly in, Junior captain Freddy Browarski drew the third and final ejection on the Trojan's best player earning a penalty shot to put the Warriors up 10-9. Anderson quickly responded however with 1 more by Junior Captain Jack Benveniste and a hat trick pulled by Sophomore Indy McBrearty the Warriors ended the game, winning 14-11. A spark energized the Warriors to pull forward along with a deafening crowd to make it the most electrifying game in the team's history so far. Both teams earned their trip to Houston for the Regional semi-finals after two amazing quarter-final matchups.
Both teams faced Foster in Houston and unfortunately couldn't keep up with Foster's speed and strength of shots. For the girls, Juniors Christina Stassforth and Effie Castel had a goal apiece with Sophomore Katherine Mayer also adding a point for the Warriors. For the boys, Junior Captain Freddy Browarski recorded 4 goals with Junior Zack Hobbs recording one as well. Both teams had their season come to an end, but there was nothing to be ashamed of.
The Warriors now begin their preparation for the next UIL fall season in 2023 with no graduating seniors this year.
