About the Makerspace@Westwood

Makerspace was officially opened in November 2017 by Dr Amy Khor, then, the Senior Minister of State for Ministry of Environment and Water Resources (SMS) & Ministry of Health. In 2018, Makerspace@Westwood opened its doors to the whole school during the inaugural Maker Fiesta.

Makerspace is open during all three recesses. It has been well-received by pupils of from levels.

"I enjoy going to the Makerspace because I can let my imagination run wild," said Jadia, a Primary 5 Innovation Club pupil, who is also our Maker Ambassador.

"The Makerspace@Westwood is a great learning space for their students. I witnessed the students’ enthusiasm and tenacity while demonstrating the skills they have acquired from this microbit project, "said President Halimah during her visit to our school's Makerspace in 2019 March.

One of the pioneering Maker schools in the West Zone

Over the years, our ALP/Maker team has shared with a quite number of local and international guests on the theoretical underpinnings in Positive Design and how we aim to initiate and stimulate pupils’ design on the basis of happiness and human flourishing. Examples of how pupils’ ideas that had come to fruition were shared.

The team has also shared on the inception of Makerspace@Westwood, which made us one of the pioneering schools in the West Zone to have a space designated to designing for happiness and encouraging pupil initiated projects. Our guests had a glimpse of how the ALP /Maker curriculum was linked to our school’s mission, vision and the THRIVE framework.

Making continues during Covid-19 pandemic

Due to Covid-19 pandemic, the Makerspace@Westwood has remained closed for physical making activities since Term 3 2020.

To facilitate the continuation of these activities at home, the Maker Team came up with Maker Kits which enabled the maker activities to be done in the safety of the pupils' homes. Our pupils were thrilled to collect their Maker Kits which comprised of various craft activities which were infused with STEAM elements, such as, making the life cycle of a butterfly using playdoh and paper puppets based on animal fables.

Upon completion of these Maker Kits, pupils can exchange them with stamps to win prizes. We also came up with Maker Packs for the P1 pupils and MOE Kindergarten@Westwood children. The Maker Team hopes that these efforts will continue to encourage the spirit of resilience in our pupils as they continue in joyful making at home.
