Colors that are opposite each other on the color wheel are considered to be complementary colors (example: red and green).

is the term used by the Japanese to express “light- dark” as an element of design.Here in the US we use other works like positive and negative space or contrast to explain this. Notans use positive space, negative space, and contrast to create a design,

Positive space is the area INSIDE of an object

Negative Space is the area AROUND an object

Contrast (in art) is the arrangement of opposite elements (light & dark, small & large)


Project 1 : Complementary Colored Notan

Students will choose complimentary colored paper to create a notan showing positive and negative space.

Tibetan Sand Mandala

The sacred art of sand painting comes from the Tibetan Buddhist tradition ( mandala of coloured powders; 'mandala' means circle in Sanskrit). Tibetan Buddhism (7th century CE) is based on Indian Buddhism (5th century CE), and its main goals are to reach individual enlightenment, the liberation of all beings, and the development of unconditional compassion and insight wisdom.

Tertiary colors

A tertiary color or intermediate color is a color made by one primary color with one neighboring secondary color.

Project 2: Name Mandala

Students will create a tracer using their name to create a mandala that creates new and interesting positive and negative space. Students will use at least one tertiary color in their design.

Stop motion

is an animated filmmaking technique in which objects are physically manipulated in small increments between individually photographed frames so that they will appear to exhibit independent motion when the series of frames is played back as a slow sequence.

Project 3: Stop Motion Animation

Students will work in teams to create a stop motion animation out of collaged paper. Students will work in teams to plan a skit based from our school theme. Students will collage backgrounds and characters, and photograph and edit their animation together.

is an American sculptor, best known for his public art installations typically featuring large replicas of everyday objects.

ARmature

The skeleton of a sculpture. The armature is the base the the sculpture that helps support it from falling down. We will be building armatures out of recyclable tools. Below is a video of how to attach cardboard together.

Project 4: Enlarged art supply sculpture

Students will create an armature from recycled materials, and paper mache around it with plaster. Students will paint their sculpture using acrylic paint
