Musa Smith was a historic and well-known student-athlete at West Perry High School, who graduated in 2000. Musa is a former football player who played as a running back. He had a successful college career at the University of Georgia, where he was known for his speed and agility. In the NFL, he played for the Baltimore Ravens from 2003 to 2007. Smith had some memorable moments on the field, including a 64-yard touchdown run against the Cleveland Browns in 2003.
Although his NFL career was cut short due to injuries, he made a lasting impact on fans and teammates with his determination and hard work. Musa was a true hometown hero in some of the people of Perry County's eyes. Smith grew up about five minutes outside of New Bloomfield, right off of Laurel Grove Road. If you are coming from New Bloomfield and look to the left, you will see a big blue house. Would you believe me If I told you that nearly 20 people lived in that house? Crazy, right?
Smith had multiple brothers and sisters that lived in the house, along with his mother and father. Musa pushed his brothers to be just like him. His brothers, Taalib and Ibrahim, were also beasts on the field; Taalib didn’t quite make the 1,000 yard banner in several categories, while Ibrahim broke the 1,000-yard banner. Without Smith there to push them, both of them wouldn't have done what they did on the field. After learning this, in my eyes, Musa Smith will forever go down as the best male athlete in our school's history.
