Alex Wahl, “The Golden Pipes”, is a sports broadcaster for West Perry High School athletics. He decided to become a sports broadcaster because “Lock Haven got him interested to be a sports broadcaster." He described how he came into the school undecided and it was a requirement for him to sign up for a club. At the club fair, he saw the table for the sports broadcasting club and decided that was something he could do.
Wahl told me why he continues to be a sports broadcaster. He said, “A lot of people ask me if I do it for the money or the fame, but no, I really do this for the students, faculty, West Perry, and other communities in general.” He also described how he does his job because it is appreciated by the opposing teams as well.
Wahl also explained that he would like to keep climbing in his career. He said, “There's this part of me that says you keep going with his.” He said how he likes working at West Perry but would like to go farther, and he has had other interests, including one from Duke, but is waiting for the timing to be right. He said his ultimate goal is to be on ESPN.
Wahl’s favorite West Perry broadcasting memory is, “When the wrestling team beat Boiling Springs last year… it was about a moment I had in that broadcast when Jackson Rush got the win and I just had an awkward pause it was that moment I realized that I wanted to be a sports broadcaster for the rest of my life.” He said that he’s seen a lot of good moments in West Perry sports including football and baseball but his all-time favorite memory was the Boiling Springs versus West Perry wrestling match.
Wahl also said, “I don't know if I have a specific favorite (sport to cover) but my top three are football, wrestling, and baseball/softball.” He loves wrestling and was a wrestler so he would say that wrestling might be his top favorite sport to cover. He also added that he wishes he could cover cross country but it would be very difficult because, “the school would not provide him a helicopter.”
Wahl also recently attended the Homecoming hot dog eating competition and won. He explained, “It was a lot of fun but I felt bad for the kids because I killed them but we’ll see what happens about (competing next year). If not, hopefully someone can beat my record.”
Wahl said, “I don’t really have a favorite but if I had to choose one it would be Dick Vitale.” Vitale, a college basketball commentator, is his favorite broadcaster because of his unique style and how he delivers his commentary, which reminds him of himself.
Starting quarterback Marcus Quaker said, “I think he’s great for our community and really brings people together to watch the West Perry sporting events through his unique broadcasts”.
Quade Boden, another West Perry football player, added, “He makes the sporting events more enjoyable to watch online when you are not able to go in person because of the energy he brings”.
