Made in 2015, episode one titled “Into the Ring” of the television series Daredevil follows a blind lawyer newly in practice as he takes on a very peculiar client who has found herself as a victim of a homicide. The two lawyers who were anxious to get their first client known as Foggy Nelson and Matt Murdock in the film are played by Elden Henson and Charlie Cox, respectively. A young lady named Karen Page finds herself on a bloody floor with a murder weapon next to her, claiming that she had nothing to do with it. Whether she had anything to do with the homicide or not is up to the new lawyers who have only been practicing eight hours. This film is one that is very dark, therefore I would only recommend this to mature adults.
Daredevil, being a Marvel movie, is full of action, and also incorporates some dark scenes. The first and most important film technique that I would take into consideration when deciding whether to watch this film is the lighting. As the first episode is based off of a homicide, as well as the victim of the homicide constantly being attacked the lighting is very dark. Many scenes it is hard to see what is going on as the rooms the characters are in are not lit, and many conversations are also held plainly in the dark. The element of sound is also a big factor to this show because the main character is blind. The main lawyer is blind, so in order to be an effective character in the film his hearing is phenomenal as it has to make up for the loss of the other senses. The sound is very loud, and very precise in certain situations such as the door creaking when a character leaves the house, or the rain coming down outside. One specific character in this film, Foggy Nelson is there for the sole purpose of bringing humor to a very dark film. When Foggy is in a scene, he brings light humor and a perspective of “good” when most of the first episode is filled with evil. The theme that is represented in the film correlates to good versus evil, as the characters show. The characters involved in the embezzlement of Union Allied Construction show evil as they are trying to kill people. The two lawyers are combatting that and representing good. The Pilot episode of the show Daredevil is a lot to take in as some of the scenes are very gruesome. Personally, I would only recommend this film for adults or upperclassmen in high school. I would not recommend this for any young kid as it does follow a homicide, and there are plenty of fight scenes.
