Elf by Jon Favreau stars Will Ferrell as Buddy the elf and other very talented cast members like James Caan playing as Walter buddy’s father and Peter Dinklage playing as Miles Finch. In the movie Buddy is taken away from his parents and brought to the north pole Where he is adopted by Papa Elf played by Bob Newhart and raised to believe that he is an elf. When we cut back to him later in the story he is shown struggling to do the things right as his body was not built to do the tasks that the elfs do. Santa Claus then shows him his real father and Buddy sets out on a mission to meet him. When he arrives in New York he doesnt fit in either as no one else believes that he is a real elf. And he is shown running around New York pretty much ruining everything he does so even though he has good intentions everyone around him hates him.
There is a conflict in the story where he tries to get his father to accept him and his father does not accept him in this time he is used as a fake elf in a local store and shown falling in love Jovie played by Zooey Deschanel and is even caught being a pervert when spying on her while she is singing in the shower but again he only has good intentions only wanting to sing along with her. And he is shown ruining christmas for a group of kids when he confronts a store santa for not being the real santa and they get into a fight and destroy the store but again this was all done out of good intentions as all he wanted to do is make sure that santa was not being impersonated. And when his father finally accepts him into the family and allows him into the house, Buddy tries to do something nice and make them a family dinner being spaghetti but again he messes it up by using syrup in it.
When Walter brings Buddy into the company building he sends him down to the mail sorting rooms. Where again buddy brings destruction everywhere he goes when he is getting along with the guys down in the mailing room he starts a huge party and this causes a complaint from one of Walter’s secretaires and when they call him this almost causes him to lose a deal with miles finch. The following day when Miles Finch arrives and is in a meeting with Walter Buddy busts into the room where again he can't do anything right when he calls Miles a elf mistaking him for one due to his short stature miles get offended and gets into a fight with Buddy, Here again he has good intentions as he was not trying to be mean when calling him an elf where he is raised it is normal for elfs to be short.
This finally causes Walter to snap and kick Buddy out of the building and tell him he never wants to see him again. When one of Walter's other kids finds out he goes to Walter who is in an important business and demands that he bring Buddy back into the family and after contemplating his decision he decides family is more important than business. And goes out to find him and bring him back to the family and has to help Santa who has crash landed in central park. This is where Walter truly changes his ways when he embraces the Christmas spirit and decides that relationships are more important than material value.
Throughout the movie there is a recurring theme of Buddy messing stuff up even when he had good intentions. The story’s comedy is mainly driven through this and this comedy pairs well with Buddy's happy go lucky personality. The movie also has a deep moral value which is that even though someone might make a mistake they are not always intentionally doing it. And we learn from Walter that relationships are more important than material things. The director did a great job of making the scenes blend well. In the movie it can get confusing when switching from a narrator to a character talking. The cast did a good job playing the characters. Will Ferell did a good job playing Buddy the elf as he really makes buddy seem like a happy go lucky guy who doesn't understand what he is doing wrong. Overall Elf is a well directed movie where the characters fit well into the story. And the cast did a great job playing the characters. And the scenes are well lit and have good sound quality. The humor throughout the story can be amusing to older and younger audiences.
