Snow days or zoom has been a very big debate between schools since covid. Some schools think that it should just be snow days like before covid because some people have internet or power issues in the storms. Parents also think it should stay snow days because smaller children have a harder time doing work at their houses and participating in the zoom calls. Other schools think that FIDs are better options because it gives the students time to do work they would have to push back and it keeps the school from having to put make-up days in the schedule and they can have their full amount of days off.
Most schools, since having to do virtual during covid, have decided that keeping it is the best thing to do. Some students prefer not to do that because they don’t like to zoom or they prefer sleeping in on snow days. Normally, on zoom days school starts a little later and there are breaks in between classes. There is also a break given for lunch which gives the students time to relax and eat. Teachers also have a hard time with zoom days because they have to throw a lesson together quickly to do on the virtual day.
Other districts have decided to keep the snow days. Snow days give the students time to relax on days where the weather is too bad to go to school. They could also help their parents on these days or catch up on school work they need to get done. Students think highly of snow days because of being able to not have to do school and get a break and do what they want. Younger children are able to play and parents sometimes enjoy these breaks because they can spend time with their children.
Snow days are also better for younger children because it’s harder for them to use technology because the youngest children in the school wouldn’t know how. It would also be harder for the parents trying to set it up and get the kids to stay on. Little children would not pay as much attention and it would be harder to keep them from goofing off.
Students also have a chance to spend time with their parents when they might not as often because of work. It also gives time for students to do things around the house because of no school work.
When interviewed an anonymous student stated,”I prefer snow days because they give me a mental health day.”
Mrs Salinetro stated,”I prefer snow days because I think students should have an option for a break and should be able to help their parents without worrying about school work.”
