West Perry High School’s theatrical productions, the annual fall play and spring musical, majorly affect the unity and wellbeing of the community. Whether it be students, teachers, or community members, the theatrics have an effect on many individuals.
In high school, many have trouble finding “their place.” The theater can be just that, a home. It gives individuals a chance to not be alone in their interests. It gives them the chance to “be a part of a bigger community.”
Just like a family, the program gives students an opportunity to find their spot. By using their talents, whether it be musical gifts or artistic ability, each student involved has a one-of-a-kind chance to discover greater possibilities.
One of West Perry’s juniors and once leading-lady, Clara Welshans, described the fall play and spring musical as a “building block for comradery among students.” She goes on to state that it is a “judgment-free zone not only for students but for the community.”
Around two thousand community members come to experience the spring musical every year. One individual from the county has even gone on to state, “The shows have brought me to my feet every year. It is truly magical to get to experience high-school aged students doing what they love.”
When questioned about the benefits of the musical on individual character, a former performer at West Perry stated that it shows “a lot more sides and stories of people that are often not shown or expressed.”
Studies also support the widely known belief that performing aids with confidence in young people. Dr. Grippin believes that it brings students and individuals out of their shells and onto the stage.
