continuous contour

learning to draw by learning to look... (back to Drawing 7th)

Draw what you see, not what you think you see! Students practice looking and drawing first without the added judgement of peeking at their process. This encourages an intent gaze and observations about how the instrument is made, what the shapes are and all of the often-overlooked details. Then, gradually, artists are allowed to peek at their papers while drawing. We start with continuous contour - meaning their drawing material is not allowed to lift from the paper... a conscious effort to create an unbroken link from their eyes, to their hand, to the paper.
