For this next section, you will want to refer to your parent's tax form for 2021.
1. Provide your parent's filing status. You will find this at the top of your parent's IRS tax form.
2. The next question will ask about the type of income tax return filed. The most common answer is, "IRS 1040". This should also be at the top of your parent's tax form.
3. Answer the question if your parent completed a Schedule 1.
The Schedule 1 is another tax form that allows someone to make changes to their income based on things like receiving alimony, unemployment compensation, student loan interest deduction, etc. If it is filled out, it is usually attached to the IRS 1040.
4. In the box, enter your parent's adjusted gross income. This can be found on their IRS 1040 on Line 11.
5. In the box, enter your parents' income tax for 2021. This can be found on their IRS 1040 on Line 22.
If your parents completed a Schedule 2, you would subtract the amount that is found on Line 2. If they completed a Schedule 2, it is usually attached to the 1040.
