English 10 is a sophomore level course designed for students to gain advanced skill levels in reading and literary interpretation. Our semester includes a multitude of units as we explore the class theme: Chasing the American Dream. Literature and informative selections are challenging and range from graphic memoirs such as I Was Their American Dream to literary classics such as Of Mice and Men to celebrated plays such as "A Raisin in the Sun." Students engage in “shared inquiry” method of literary analysis, with emphasis on purposeful reading, open discussion of ideas, clear communication, and effective argumentation backed by textual evidence. The writing program includes informative, argumentative, and narrative essays with intense work on revision skills. The writing program also includes research based projects to expand on topics presented in the student choice unit.
Our guiding questions will help us navigate through fiction, nonfiction, podcasts, videos, and other pieces of media.
How does the concept of the American Dream differ based on culture, religion, and ethnicity?
What is a microaggression? How can we be mindful of how our words affect others?
How do people struggle due to their socioeconomic status, gender, race, or disabilities?
How do people express their biases towards each other? What can we do to recognize our unconscious biases?
How can history change as we hear different perspectives; especially voices that were stifled?
How can we develop understanding of other cultures? How can we demonstrate our respect for other cultures?
What factors shape identity? What parts of identity can people choose for themselves? What parts of identity are determined by other people or as a society?
