Below is an outline of the 6th curriculum. Dates for skills taught are subject to change. Chapter numbers reference the BIG IDEAS textbook.
Number Theory, Chapter 1
October
In this unit, we will look at characteristics of numbers and their relationships. Topics to be covered are factors, multiples, primes, composites, prime factorization, order of operations, GCF and LCM. This is a great game to practice Order of Operations!
Ratios and Rates, Chapter 5
November - December
In this chapter, students will learn how to identify and write ratios in a variety of ways. They will use ratios to find larger portions and wholes; or smaller portions and wholes. They will work with equivalent ratios and rates and use tape diagrams, tables, and unit rates to solve problems. They will also compare rates and ratios using graphs, unit rates, and common quantities.
Operations with Fractions, Chapter 2 (First half of chapter 2)
December
We will begin this chapter with adding and subtracting mixed numbers. The focus will be to keep mixed numbers in their original form, especially with subtracting. We will be borrowing from the wholes when needed, not turning the mixed numbers into improper fractions. We will then move into multiplying and dividing fractions and mixed numbers, working on both the process and what it means to multiply or divide.

Percents, Chapter 5 (2nd half of chapter 5)
Students will work with percents and their equivalent fractions. They will solve percent problems and find percent of a number. They will also find whole and parts when given the percent. Finally they will use equivalent rates methods to change between common measurement units.

Pre-Algebra, Chapter 3
January?
This chapter will cover reading and writing algebraic equations, evaluating algebraic expressions, and identifying parts of an algebraic expression. Additionally, it will introduce addition and multiplication properties such as: commutative, associative, property of 1, property of 0 and the distributive property. We will also combine like terms.
Area/Perimeter of Polygons and the Coordinate System, Chapter 4
January?
In our geometry unit we will study polygons. We will both identify these shapes and find their areas. Then we will combine these shapes and find their perimeters and areas. Finally, we will also graph these on the coordinate grid, find their side lengths and then find their perimeters and areas.

Integers, Chapter 6
March
Chapter 6 is about integers and what makes integers different from whole numbers. We will compare and order integers and place them on a number line. We will then extend that skill to all rational numbers. We will define and identify absolute value. Finally we will place points on the coordinate grid, all four quadrants and find distances between points on the coordinate grid.
Algebra, Writing and Solving Equations and Inequalities, Chapter 7
April
This unit focuses on writing equations with two variables, solving them algebraically, and graphing them on a coordinate grid. We then will work with inequalities, again, writing them from phrases and word problems, solving them algebraically, and graphing the solution set on a number line.
Three- Dimensional Geometry, Chapter 8
May
A study of 3D shapes. We will find the surface area of rectangular prisms and square and triangular pyramids. We will also work with the volume of rectangular prisms when their dimensions are fractional and decimal numbers.
Data and Statistics, Chapters 9 and 10
May and June
A study of mean, median and mode. We will decide which measure of center best represents the data. We also create graphs and plots and decide which type of graph or plot would be best with a particular set of data.
