The Westerville Music Curriculum is aligned with the Ohio Department of Education K-12 Music Academic Content Standards. The program encourages students to explore diverse music, through performing and music theory, under the instruction of a certified music teacher.
The Music Course of Study describes the skills and knowledge that all students are taught in the elective music courses in middle school and at the high school level. This provides guidelines from which the teachers can design and implement instruction. Included are benchmarks and indicators that are offered to help teachers determine if students are achieving the instructional goals that are defined.
The middle school music courses, with the exception of 6th grade Music, focus on teaching the music standards through a focus of performance. The 6th grade music course focuses more on music appreciation and theory aspect of music, with less emphasis on performance.
