Skimming and scanning are two fundamental strategies we use when trying to find information quickly and efficiently.
Skimming is the process of reading through a text quickly, reading key parts of a text like, titles, the first and last sentences of a paragraph, looking at the pictures. We use skimming in order to see if the text will meet the purpose for which we are reading. It is an important strategy for students to use in order to prepare them for what they are about to read.
Scanning is very similar to skimming however it is used in order to locate specific information within a text. Students scan through the text looking for key words that relate to the topic or question they are focusing on. When scanning students don't read every word or sentence, they use clues such as titles or pictures to locate areas of interest. Scanning also involves the use of identifying header words, like titles or text that is bold.
Skimming and scanning allows students to quickly locate information within a text. This is really important when researching and having to locate and sort through a large amount of information in a short time. Students will be using fundamental reading strategies like finding the main idea and locating key words whilst using this strategy.
