Knowledge of vocabulary looks at the process of learning new words and how we use them. Students who understand the meaning of words are able to read fluently and are able to find the meaning of words without the support or prompts form others. Knowledge of vocabulary also looks at the root words and builds students understandings of how words can change depending on the context.
Students who are able to identify words they don't know are then able to use strategies in order to learn these new words. Building vocabulary is important especially when looking into subject specific language which is often used in schools. Understanding what different words mean, allows students to read fluently and to take on increasingly difficult texts. Expanding vocabulary also impacts on how students write and read new information.
