Identifying the purpose of a text draws on a students understanding of why texts are written and who they are written for. Students will draw form their prior knowledge around why we read and the fact that texts are written in order to entertain, persuade or inform. When discussing the purpose of a text students have to evaluate and analyse the text style and what it has been designed to do. Students will be drawing from the fundamental reading strategies in order to develop this reading strategy.
Understanding information within a text is important but understand why the text was written and who it was written for develops a deeper understanding of the purpose of texts. Students who can identify and discuss the purpose of a text need to critically think about what texts are designed to do and will begin to understand that there is always a purpose behind why something is written.
