When exploring the author's purpose students will be looking at why they think the author has written this text. Students will need to look at the style of the text and the language used in order to find out the texts purpose and they will then need to think about why the author has chosen to write in this way. Exploring an authors purpose can look at historical societal issues that may have affected the author in some way. When questioning the intent students will make inferences as to why they think the author has chosen the style to write in and who the audience for this text might be.
Students who are able to see beyond the text in front of them are able to critically analyse and interpret information in their own way. Understanding that texts may be biased or come from a different perspective helps develop abstract thinking skills and allows students to judge whether the information they read is relevant or will have an impact on others.
