As the name of this skill states students who are able to consistently read for meaning are able to understand what they read and use the fundamental strategies in order to make sense of the text. Consistently reading for meaning is a reading behaviour and is reinforced by making sure the student is self monitoring whilst they are reading.
Self monitoring is when a reader is able to adjust how they read and interpret information by using the fundamental reading strategies. Not all strategies are needed all the time, but having a good grasp on what to do when we come accross aspects of a text that are tricky is what is important to learn.
