Spring Term Information
PE Days:
Term 3:
PE will be on a Monday and children will be expected to wear their full PE kit on this day.
Forest School will be on a Wednesday afternoon and children are allowed to wear their own (old) clothes into school. They must make sure they have welly boots, waterproofs and/or spare clothes to change into as the weather this term can be particularly changeable!
Homework:
We expect children to read 3x a week to an adult/ sibling and for this to be recorded in their reading record.
Children will have weekly spellings sent home to practice and we will support their learning of this in class.
Each week we will send home a maths task- this may be on paper or it could be on doodlemaths.
Please encourage your child to be in the green zone on doodle!
Term 3
Term 3 Overview:
Here is the outline of what we will be teaching this term.
Another week has whizzed by and what a week it has been! We've continued working on certain multiplication and division facts in Maths- focusing on the 8 times tables this week. We thoroughly enjoyed playing times table based games on Wednesday together.
In Geography we started our next unit of work about Europe and loved using digimaps to see how the population varied in different places.
Forest school was another hit this week and we loved making our own medallions with the saw!
It's a big week next week with our trip to the Museum on Friday- we can't wait!
What a fantastic start to term 3! We have been so impressed by the focus and attitude that Kingfisher have returned to school with this week. We have kicked off our English learning with the book "Egyptian Cinderella" and we can't wait to see what creative stories come our way!
It was a fantastic weather day (albeit a bit chilly) for our first forest school session of the year and the whole class were very excited. They threw themselves fully into each activity and Mrs Harvey was incredibly impressed with their behaviour this week- photos to follow! Please make sure that you have sent your child in with enough layers and accessories to keep warm- hats, goves, scarves etc!
Thank you also for helping your child come to school in the correct uniform- they are looking smart and ready to learn! We will continue to send messages home or provide uniform from the spare uniform boxes if your child isn't wearing suitable clothing!
Term 2
Term 2 Overview:
Here is the outline of what we will be teaching this term.
What a fantastic final couple of weeks we have had! From performing to cooking our seasonal tarts and then a whole day of crafts to wrap up the year! We have been so impressed with how focused and courageous our Kingfishers have been over the last couple of weeks- it isn't easy speaking in front of a large audience and they absolutely nailed it!
We thoroughly enjoyed cooking our seasonal tarts on Monday and again, we were blown away with the desire to try new vegetables and be adventurous with what was being created.
It has been an absolute pleasure teaching your children this term. Thank you so much for the cards and gifts, it was very kind of We wish you all a very Merry Christmas and can't wait to see you again in the new year.
It's been another busy week this week with preparations for our Nativity well underway- we have been so impressed by how well our children have learnt their lines and how they are projecting their voices!
In Maths this week, we have started learning about multiplication and have used practical resources to help consolidate our understanding of equal groups and learn about arrays.
We have been fortunate this week to have a visitor lead a workshop for us about the Stone and Iron age and visit the church and the library!
Our workshop on Monday helped us to see how different life was between the Stone and Iron age and we loved using drama and movement to help us understand this better.
On Wednesday, we wrapped up and enjoyed visiting St. John's Church where we were warmly welcomed and given a tour of the building. For many, the grandeur of the building was very impressive and we all had lots of questions to ask Guy and Phillip.
As ever, our trip to the library doesn't disappoint and we loved spending some time choosing a book.
Another week of rehearsals next week before our final week of term!
We can't believe it's the end of week 4 already - it has been a busy week again in Kingfisher class.
In D.T earlier this week we loved sampling different vegetables (both raw and cooked) that we might use in our savoury tarts. It was great to see so many children challenge themselves to try something new- the cooked red onion was surprisingly popular!
In English, we are focusing on letter writing using our book 'The Island' as our prompt. On Tuesday, we used drama to get into character and it was a lot of fun creating freeze frames of different moments from the story. We also had a go at a thought tunnel which, albeit a little loud, really showed how much we understood about the character's thought process.
Things to note about Week 5:
Monday- Stone Age Workshop in the afternoon.
Wednesday- Visit to St. John's Church 9-10.40 (helpers welcome!!)
Friday- School Fayre 4.30 - 7pm
We have had a busy couple of weeks in Kingfisher class. We have been mastering our application of formal column methods for subtraction and addition in Maths and it has been really important to use concrete apparatus to help us visually see what is happening to our numbers.
In English, we have carried on using the book 'The Island' to inspire our writing and we have been absolutely blown away by the quality of writing that the children have produced. They have made us feel incredibly proud of them and are really starting to show us what they are capable of!
In D.T, we are well into our project focusing on 'Seasonal Tarts' and this week we spent time developing our peeling and chopping skills. It felt only natural to then sample all the veggies too!
Upcoming items to note:
Non school uniform Friday 28th with donations for school fayre.
1st December- Stone Age Workshop (in school)
3rd December- Visit to St John's Church MSN
If anyone is able to help walk us to the Church on Wednesday 3rd December, we're planning to leave at 9 and should be back for break time (10.40).
What a fantastic return to school it has been! We have thoroughly enjoyed getting stuck into our new text 'The Island' by Mark Janssen and we have been blown away by the creativity and new ideas that have been shared together as a class.
In preparation for Parents in PE, we loved making our banana, oat cookies and it was lots of fun mashing the bananas and trying the pumpkin seeds- many were a little unsure at first!
Our first Parents in PE session was a real hit and we are very grateful that so many of you were able to come and support this event. It was really lovely to see the class working together and with their parents (and grandparent!) to have fun and be active. What a super start to Term 2!
Next Week:
It is a bit of a busy week next week so a few reminders!
Monday- Odd Socks Day
Tuesday - Remembrance - Wear red
Friday- Ramble for Children in Need
Term 1
Term 1 Overview:
Here is the outline of what we will be teaching this term.
We've made it to the end of term 1 and we could not be prouder of Kingfisher Class! It has been lovely to see most of you this week at Parents' Evening and we have loved sharing your child's progress with you. A real highlight this week was Stone Age Day which saw us; hunt for berries, create our own cave art, make clay weapons, make bread dough and attempt to cook it on an open fire. The children were spectacular- embracing every activity with enthusiasm and excitement. For some, new fruits were sampled and for others we saw some impressive tool making. Mr Munroe surprised us with his neolithic hand axe and we loved learning about how it would've been used.
We hope you have a super break and look forward to seeing everyone back on the 3rd of November!
Week 7
It has been another busy week with the trip to The Egg, the Library, assessments and becoming archaeologists outside! It was so lovely to kick off the week at the theatre and it was great to hear the belly laughs from our children as they sat and watched the show. Our children were amazing and it was clear to see they enjoyed the entire experience.
On Friday morning, we headed outside to discover what had been buried for us in the outside area. We loved becoming archaeologists and are super excited to get writing about our discoveries next week!
Just a reminder that it is Stone Age Day next week and we are hoping to spend lots of time outside (weather permitting) so please make sure your child has enough layers of clothing to remain warm! Similarly, any prop brought in must be safe!
Week 6
This week saw the culmination of our efforts for our Harvest Festival at Welton Baptist Church. The children were absolutely brilliant and we are so proud of how well they performed!
October also marks the beginning of Black History Month and we have created some artwork in the style of Esther Mahlangu, a South African Artist, whose artwork was inspired by her Ndebele heritage.
Hopefully you've been able to book a slot for Parents' Evening which will be in the last week of term- if you haven't managed to yet- there are still plenty of spaces.
Next week, we will be carrying out the first round of formal assessments which will help us to shape our learning for term 2.
Have a lovely weekend!
Week 5
It's been another fantastic week of learning in Kingfisher class and it has been great to see the children get excited and stuck into their learning.
In English, we have started to look at newspaper reports which is linked to our learning about the Stone Age. We learnt a little bit about Skara Brae and then had some fun using freeze frames to imagine what life would've been like for the archaeologists who discovered it. We also used macaroni pasta to help us punctuate our sentences.
In Maths, we finished our unit on place value counting in 50 and playing games with each other counting to 50. We have now started our new unit on Addition and Subtraction.
A message went home this week about a free trip to the Egg theatre on Tuesday 14th October- if you haven't filled out the permission form yet- please do so!
Have a lovely weekend!
Week 4
We're halfway through the term and what another belter it has been! We thoroughly enjoyed having a double PE slot with Mr Kingwell on Wednesday who made us work very hard!
In English this week we have loved looking at the book Actual Size and we were amazed by the sizes of the animals shown in the book. We have created our own fact files about bones in the body which links to our learning in Science this term. Ask your child about the femur and the stirrup- I'm sure they could tell you where they are!
In Maths, we got practical again and worked as a team to estimate where numbers up to 1000 would go on a numberline.
We're working our way through the Stone Age and this week we learnt about the Mesolithic Age (the middle!) It's amazing to find out how they adapted their lifestyles as they evolved and made new discoveries.
Week 3
Another brilliant week with our Kingfishers and we have been really impressed with how they have continued to impress us with their enthusiasm to learn.
We have loved writing our stories this week based on the book "Stone Age Boy" and it was great to hear some superb expanded noun phrases to describe certain aspects. A particular favourite was the "sizzling, crackling roast beef cooked upon the bright fire."
It was lovely to meet a few of you at our Meet the Teacher event on Wednesday. For those who weren't able to make it, please feel free to grab us at the end of the day if you have any concerns.
A message will be going out about our Upcoming Stone Age Day on Wednesday 22nd of October but the information is in the key dates box above.
Have a lovely weekend!
Week 2
This week has absolutely flown by and we have continued to enjoy getting settled in to our new routines and patterns of life in year 3.
In Maths, we have continued our learning with Place value and moving on to using base ten to represent our numbers and understand the value that they are worth. It's been great to see the class use the concrete resources so confidently to show what they understand.
We have loved delving into our first writing text of the year: Stone Age Boy and have blown everyone away with our excellent use of Expanded Noun Phrases!
We have our Meet the Teacher session next Wednesday, straight after school in our classroom so come along and find out a little bit more about what is going on in Kingfisher class this year!
Week 1
Welcome back to school Kingfishers!! We have been blown away by how brilliantly you have settled into the new routines and changes to life in Year 3 and KS2! It has been a very busy week but we have loved getting to know you and getting practical with our learning. We really enjoyed seeing all the new additions to our outside play area and forest school. We even took our Maths learning outside and used natural resources to represent numbers up to and including one hundred!
Meet our wonderful team.
Mrs Berry:
I'm Mrs Berry and I will be teaching Monday- Wednesday. I love baking and playing sport- last year I joined a netball team and have learnt lots of new skills playing this year. I can't wait to get stuck in to teaching Y3 and working alongside you all to help you make progress in your learning.
