Conversely, individuals struggling with substance abuse may become vulnerable targets for traffickers seeking to exploit their vulnerabilities.

Supporting Your Organization with Restorative Leadership

Supporting Survivors Through The Forensic Interview Process

This workshop will provide an overview of what a forensic interview is and how a case of commercial sexual exploitation of children progresses through the criminal justice system. We will discuss how a trafficking survivor may differ from other victims of child abuse, and the importance of preparation and support throughout the forensic interview process. Furthermore, participants will gain an understanding of how a strong forensic interview can impact the outcome of criminal prosecution, and more importantly, prevent additional trauma to survivors.

In this breakout session, Georgia Attorney General Chris Carr’s Human Trafficking Prosecution Unit will explore the ways in which victim advocates can contribute to the conviction of those who buy and sell children for sexual servitude. Unit Chief Hannah Palmquist will identify the building blocks of a successful prosecution and the essential role that advocacy plays in obtaining a guilty verdict. Chief Investigator Bryan Kimbell will outline the steps of a successful investigation and the ways in which investigators and advocates can work together to build a winning case.

Online Safety Trends and Free Resources

The National Center for Missing & Exploited Children's unique perspective as the nation's centralized reporting mechanism for suspected child exploitation offers important insights into the risks children face online. NCMEC data shows that children under the age of 12 are often victims of online enticement, sextortion, and child sexual abuse imagery. The Forensic Nursing Role in Caring for Pediatric Human Trafficking Survivors: Understanding the Complexities of Pediatric Sexual Violence and Child Maltreatment

This presentation will provide a general overview of the forensic nursing scope and standards of practice and key roles of the forensic medical examiner/sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE) in regards to caring for pediatric trauma survivors. Significantly, this presentation will elaborate on human trafficking and child abuse and it’s correlation to ACEs. After completing this session, learners will obtain greater insight regarding patient-centered and trauma-informed care as it relates to the pediatric human trafficking population.
