This course introduces students to the interdisciplinary study of gender and sexuality. The course will take both a historical and contemporary focus. Students will analyze shifts in the social construction of gender and sexuality across time, as well as look at ways gender and sexuality are considered today and the impact these considerations have on the individual. Historical topics covered in the course include: the shifting meaning of the family, feminism and women’s movements, changing definitions of masculinity, the history of the LGBTQ community, and gender theory. Contemporary topics include: gender socialization, inequality and difference, human sexuality, the politics of the body, the economics of the household, LGBTQ movements, and the intersection between gender and race.
