Health Issues is a tenth grade course that meets 5 times a cycle. The Units covered include: Sexual Education (Reproductive Anatomy, Protection Methods, Sexually Transmitted Infections, Sexuality/Gender Studies), Healthy vs. Unhealthy Relationships, Consent within a relationship, CPR, Drugs and Alcohol Prevention, and Mental Health, including Depression Awareness. Additionally, the Health Issues course will allow for fitness activities including, Fitness Center Workouts, Sports Education, Adventure activities, and recreational dance.
Sexual Health: Students will be able to identify the benefits of delaying sexual activity or choosing abstinence. Students will also leave the course with an understanding of the most common protection & contraception methods, and how to advocate for their sexual health.
Sexuality: Students will be able to identify the different components that exist within gender studies. They will have an understanding of different categories of gender (biology, orientation, expression, & identity).
Drugs & Alcohol: Students will demonstrate the ability to use the decision-making protocol to enhance health in regards to use/abuse of drugs and alcohol. This includes demonstrating an understanding of refusal skills.
Health & Safety: Through the CPR Unit of instruction, Students will have an understanding of how to help in an emergency setting. They will understand the skills necessary to assist in an emergency if they are willing too. They will know how to assess a medical emergency and to initiate the A,C,T sequence: "Acknowledge", "Care", & "Tell" a trusted adult.
Mental Health: Students will be able to identify the major signs of mental health illnesses. They will also understand how to initiate an action plan/ protocol on how to help a friend who is showing warning signs that they are dealing with a problem bigger than themself.
